Roos down
winless Elks
Burleson Star. Monday. November 6. 1989—3A
By RAY PRICE
Tumoveis and injuries again
tock their toll as the Burleson Elks
dropped their ninth game of the
season Friday night, falling to
Weatherford 31-15.
The Elks fumbled away their
first three possessions, allowing the
Kangaroos to build up a quick first
quarter lead of 17-0.
Injuries also played their part
in the third quarter when quarterback
Bobby Moorhead left the game with
what appeared to be a knee injury.
The exact extent of the injury was
not known at press time.
Moorhead's absense gave junior
Chip Stephens an opportunity to
prove he is Mr. Versatility for the
Elks.
Last week Stephens caught five
passes for two touchdowns and 148
yards.
This week he took over
command of the Elks, completing
four of seven passes for 88 yards
and one TD.
Another newcomer to the Elk
backfield, running back Christian
Baird, provided solid running in
game's final quarter as the Elks
fought to overcome the injuries and
mistakes.
Almost from the beginning of
the game it looked as if destiny was
on the side of the Kangaroos.
After returning the opening
kickoff to the Weatherford 41 yard
line, the Kangaroos took 11 plays
and almost five minutes to score
their first touchdown.
On the ensuing kickoff Baird
h?.d a hard time handling the ball
ar 1 was downed on the Elks 12 yard
lice.
Moorhead opened for the Elks
with a quarterback draw that netted
five yards but, on the next play,
missed on the handoff with running
back Eric Fletcher and Weatherford
recovered the fumble at the
Burleson 17 yard line.
Fletcher redeemed himself on
the next play when he recovered a
Kangaroo fumble at the Elk 20 yard
line.
Fletcher's recovery was for
naught, though, as Stephens cough-
ed the ball up two plays later when
he was hit hard by a Weatherford
defender.
IT; Elks again escaped a bullet
when the defense stopped Weather-
ford at the six yard line and a pass
on a fake field goal slipped through
the intended receiver's hand.
The Elks took the ball on
downs at their own 6 yard line and
moved it to the 29 before they
suffere 1 their third turnover and first
pass interception of the game.
This time Weatherford didn't
need to use the fake, driving the
ball into the end zone in three plays
and taking a 14-0 lead.
The Kangaroos expanded that
lead early in the second period when
they drove to the Burleson 18 yard
line and kicked a field goal.
Trailing 17-0, the Elks finally
began to move the ball.
Fletcher hit the middle for four
yards oefore Moorhead missed on
two pass attempts.
A fourth down punt turned into
Elks break through to block Weatherford field goal attempt
a first down for Burleson when the
Kangaroos were flagged for
roughing the kicker.
Moorhead then hit Byron
Cassidy for 11 yards and a first
down their own 42 yard line.
Fletcher picked five up the
middle, Moorhead sprinted the
outside for 10, and Fletcher banged
the lef. side for 15 more.
Moorhead then sprang loose for
14 before Fletcher lost one and an
illegal procedure penalty set the ball
back to the Weatherford 20 yard
line
Ti e Burleson quarterback then
found Cassidy for 16 yards and a
first drwn at the four yard line.
Fletcher lost one on a dive,
Moorhead missed on a toss to
Fernando Paz and was then sacked
for a nine yard loss.
Mark Zimmer then picked up
the Elks first points of the night
when ie booted a field goal from
the 23 yard line.
Weatherford took the following
kickoff and quickly moved to the
Elks 24 yard line where the drive
stalled.
A field goal attempt went ary

for the Roos though when Burton
Busse and Ken Luce broke through
for the block.
With only seconds remaining
in the half, it began to look as the
Elks night close the gap to one
touchdown.
Moorhead first hit Stephens for
18 yards and a first down at the
Elks 48 yard line. Then he ran for
28 more yards to take the ball to
the Roos 24 yard line.
Moorhead then found Cassidy
on the left sidefor six yards. On the
next play he hit Stephens at the
three yard line, setting up a first and
goal with only two second left in
the half.
The last ditch effort to score,
however, proved in vain when a
pass from Moorhead to Baird was
just out of the receiver's reach.
The Elks picked up their first
touchdown in the game early in the
final period of action when, trailing
24-3, Stephens broke loose on a 60
yard scamper that set the Elks up at
the Weatherford 10 yard line.
Baird sprinted the right side for
six yards, then burst up the middle
for four and the TD. Zimmer's extra
point kicked was low but the Elks
had closed the gap to 24-9.
Burleson got a break five plays
later when defensive end Jeff Grace
pounced on a Weatherford fumble,
giving the Elks possession at the
Burleson 34 yard line.
Stephens and Baird combined
for thirteen yards on two plays
before Stephens found Paz streaking
the right side. That pass completion
was good for 44 yards, taking the
Elks to the Roos 21 yard line.
After two losses on running
plays, Stephens found Paz a second
time, this one good for 18 yards to
the Weatherford 11 yard line.
On fourth down Stephens hit
Jason Stewart for 11 yards and the
score. The attempt for two was
unsuccessful, leaving the score at
24-15.
The Roos added on final score
in the game's final moments,
making the final score 31-15.
