Letters to the Editor:
'Makes me angry
to see nasty, smelly
and unsightly trash'
Dumping has been a major
concern of our city for quite
some time now, and I agree. It
makes me so angry to think that
some of our citizens are trashing
our beautiful city and coun-
tryside with nasty, smelly, and
unsightly junk!
The question that I ask is,
"Where do we dump?” Many
towns allow their citizens to
dump in the landfill if they have
a water bill to show. Our city
does not afford us that privilege,
as we have no landfill. I feel that
if an alternative were given to
South Hurst Road and our coun-
tryside, the problem mi^t not be
eliminated, but possraR cur-
tailed.
Occasionally, we find it necess-
ary' to discard items. We drove to
the Cleburne Landfill and found
that it was not open to the public.
We proceeded to the Johnson
County Landfill, also to find it
not open to the public. Itasca
Landfill was the closest place
that we could find to dump, and
that is nui close. Although it is a
long way from here—in Hill
County—we make the drive.
Does anyone know of closer

places to dump? If so, I feel that
some dumpers might "clean up'
their nasty habits and become
more civilized bv going to a
designated area lor that purpose.
Directions would be very help-
ful.
I realize that regardless of how
many alternatives are given,
some uncaring and selfish peo-
ple will continue this disgraceful
practice. I wish a law were in ef-
fect so that, when caught, dum-
pers' cars could be lagged with
bumper stickers stating, "I have
no city pride; I got caught dump-
ing in Burleson.”
Maybe City Hall eould get a list
of alternatives and directions so
that people wishing to use a
landfill would have a place to
go-
BRENDA MOORE
What happened to the public
school system in Burleson? What
happened to a free education?
Why are we punishing the
students who keep their grades
up, try out and earn the right to
be in an extracurricular activity?
We should be supportive of these
students. If extra money is
needed to be charged, why not
charge the students who require
a teacher to supervise them in
all-day detention?
Why are parents now being
notified so late in the school year
after so much out-of-pocket ex-
pense for extracurricular ac-
tivities has already been paid? No
neighboring school district re-
quires this much help from
their students.
My children also receive a
grade that goes on their scholas-
tic record for this extracurricular
activity. So now am I paying
for grades?
This does not seem like a laii-
deal for our students. I ap-
preciate the school board in try-
ing to find a solution for our'
problems, but somehow I feel
like I’ve been a victim rather
than a pan of the solution to
the problem.
Also Disgruntled,
JANE A. RUDOLPH
