1 the season to Be shopping! Christmas may
Be a time of spiritual and family celeBration, But it's also a
time for Breaking out the credit cards, checks, and cash (if
you happen to have any or even rememBer what that is).
(When the phrase 'it's Better to give than to receive'
was originally coined, the idea that giving could cost so
much never entered the picture.
But, all that aside, it is Christ-
mas time and everyone's weekends
are filled with shopping excursions
and bargain hunting. And there are
plenty of bargains to be found if one
takes the time to shop smart. For each
of us, making just the right purchase
for all those on our Christmas lists is
a high priority. And the countdown
has definitely begun. There are only
10 shopping days til Christmas.
Shopping for the one you love is
a never ending quest for the best—
the one thing that'll bring a smile to
the lips of your spouse or sweetheart
once the wrapping paper is tossed
aside and your 'treasure' exposed.
You know you've made a wrong turn
somewhere if his response is "Oh,
yeah, that's real cute." These arc not
the kind of words you want to hear
when your search has taken you to
umpteen different stores and sales
clerks from each one had held cloth-
ing items up against their chests to
see if you think it'll fit your fella.
Women arc the largest consum-
ers in this country, period. But the
numbers hold true during Christmas
shopping days too, according to part
time sales cleric and student Donna
Sharp at Beall's in Burleson—at least
that holds true at her store. Kinda
makes you wonder how many men
ate sending women friends, secretar-
ies, or daughters out to do their' shop-
ping for their wives.
But that's OK, too. They proba-
bly realize that women are a little bit
more particular about certain things.
A pair of jeans (hot this year, as
always, on women's wish lists) has to

hang just right on the hips— dimin-
ishing instead of enlarging the pack-
age— so it may take a little while to
find just the right brand to accom-
plish that job.
Beall's sells a lot of denim jeans
for gifts, from junior to more mature
sizes and cuts, available in several
colors, and acid or stone washed to a
T. Also big this year, according to
§harp, arc vests to go with those
jeans, skirts, or dresses. If you've got
a vest, you're in, we hear.
In addition to jeans, the new
style harem slacks—v-e-r-y loose
lilting around the legs— are popular
too. They're being wom for both
casual and dress wear, so a versatile
gift you're giving with this new item.
Sweatshirts and nightshirts are
particularly .plentiful, but plain is
out—these items all have animals or
hand painted one-of-a-kind designs
this year. Check them out at
Mitchell's or Beall's; there will be
someone on your list who'll love one.
Fragrances—they're always
good, but selecting one for a lady is a
bit difficult since they create differ-
ent scents on different women. We
suggest you listen carefully to con-
versations between your wife and
friends or daughters to "pick up” on
what she prefers this year.
For men, it would seem that
shopping can beabit easier. This, ac-
cording to most retail experts, is a
ivm tie nett a winter wear u uig setter jur men
"back to basics" Christmas.
That means loads of underwear
(the scrvicable kind, not the fantasy
type), socks, ties, jeans, hats, and
gloves.
There are no major men's fads
floating around this season. Last year
acid washed jeans seemed to be on
everyone's list This season they have
been replaced by shoppers returning
to standard jeans, both straight leg
and boot type.
If jeans are not on his list but he
isajeans kind of guy, then you might
consider Roper boots. They continue
this year to make a record number of
appearances at the check out stands.
If he's not a boot kind of guy,
then you might check the current
supplies of high tech athletic shoes.
Many merchants are reporting
strong sales on athletic shoes
ranging from $50 to $80.
How about a pair of boots for dad, Mom?
