City boards are open
BY DOTTIE WILSON
Those who like to be involved
in the decision making process
of specific areas of city planning
have an excellent opportunity
right now.
There will be openings this
year on each ol the eight
municipal boards or com-
missions, according to Mayor
Jerry Boone. Applications are
available at City Hall; the only
qualifications lor consideration
are an interest in the city ol
Burleson and haring resided
here for at least one year
The applications, which can be
filled out in City Secretary Jean
Phillip's office, are not lengthy.
Mostly tWe\ need the essentials—
name, address, phone number—
as well as which area ol board
membership you would be most
interested in. "We have sent out
brie! letters to each board mem-
ber whose term is expiring to see
il he or she is willing to serve
again. From experience we know
that some will and some won’t
continue on the boards. So we
w'ould like to have applications
in hand from those who would
be interested,” said Boone.
Even after board members are
appointed, extra applications are
kept on file for future use if other
openings occur during the year.
"There are always those cases of
board members either moving
away or a job situation which
prevents them from continuing
to serve duting their term Hav-
ing a list of those who are in-
terested helps us fill those
openings quickly so that their
work isn’t interrupted," he
continued.
THE ADVISORY BOARDS ol
the city make recommendations
to the city council regarding their
specific areas, and appointments
are for a period of two years.
Most ol the boards are made
up ol seven members, said
Boone, except for the pro-
fessional boards—plumbing, el-
ectrical, and mechanical—which
are comprised of four members.
In the case of those three boards,
members must also be members
of that profession.
Seven-member boards include
the Planning and Zoning Com-
mission, Zoning Board of Adjust-
ment and Appeals, Building
Board of Adjustment and Ap-
peals, Park Board, and Library
Board. P and Z board members
meet two Tuesdays per month
normally, said the mayor. They
consider and make recommen-
dations to the council regarding
zoning and subdivision planning
requests.
The Zoning Board ol Adjust-
ment and Appeals, as the name
implies, considers requests made
for variances from the ordinan-
ces on zoning. Their meetings
are held one Monday per month.
Building Board ol Adjustment
and Appeals members consider
various building codes and meet
on the third Monday of each
month.
IF YOU’RE MORE interested
in the great outdoors, there's a
board to fit vour interest. Park
Board members meet the first
Thursday of the month, and their
work is the establishment of use
policies for the entire park sys-
tem in Burleson Planning for
the future ol the Burleson Public-
Library and setting operating
principles are the charges of Lib-
ra rv Board members, who meet
the first Tuesday ol the month.
Members of the three pro-
fessional boards mentioned
earlier meet only on call, approx-
imately lour or five limes per
year, said Boone. They hear ap-
peals concerning electrical, plum-
bing, or mechanical codes.
Most ol the boards meet at city
hall, with the exception of the
Parks Board (at the Community
Center) and Library Board (at
the library). Municipal boards
and commissions are voluntary
positions.

Breast cancer is worst killer
II you are a woman and you
keep forgetting the importance ol
regular breast self-examination,
consider some tacts.
One out ol every 11 women in
the United Stales gets breast can-
cer during her lifetime. Breast
cancer strikes more than 1 1 2,000
American women each year, and
kills over 57,000 women a year. It
is the leading cause ol all deaths
in women Irom age 40 to 44
Some alarming statistics —but
here is the most important statis-
tic of all About 80 percent of the
time women discover the disease-
before it is too late.
According to a seven year study
conducted by University ol Ver-
mont researchers, women who
regularly practiced breast self-
examination (BSE) detected can-
cers earlier and lived longer than
women who never examine
themselves. When women do
BSE monthly they usually find
the tumors themselves when they
ate smaller in size and less life-
threatening.
A class to teach you hove to ef-
fectively detect breast cancer in
its early stages is conducted each
month at the Huguley Health Fit-
ness Center. It is tastefully taught
by a certified instructor.
In September, the BSE class
will be held on the 16th from 10
to 11 a.m It is free ol charge. To

mation call 551-1771.
