resident dies
A total of 35 persons died on Texas
highways during the New Year’s week-
end, four less than the 39 deaths predic-
t ted by the Department of Public Safety.
The New Year brought a new tougher
DWI law in the state and extra patrols
by local police and state troopers.
There were two alcohol-related traf-
fic accidents in Burleson, one late
Saturday night and one early Sunday
morning.
A one-vehicle accident occurred on
the accident-prone twin bridges on
County Road 600 east of Burleson at
10:40 p.m. Saturday. A pickup driven
by Robert Clay Robertson, 27, of Fort
Worth went out of control and hit the
left side of the bridge as it was west-
bound in CR 600.
Robertson was not injured in the
wreck and his pickup received minor
damage. He was arrested for DWI and
having no proof of liability insurance by
state trooper John Meara.
Two Burleson residents were treated
at Huguley Hospital for injuries suffer-
ed in a mishap on S. Scott at 3:03 a.m.
Sunday. A car driven by Travis Loyd
Wallace, 37, of Burleson was south-
bound on Scott when it collided with a
parked vehicle. The impact pushed the
parked car 50 feet, Burleson police said.
Wallace and a passenger, Danny Wal-
lace, 38, of Burleson were taken to
Huguley Hospital by Regional Am-
bulance. Danny Wallace suffered a
fractured neck and was released from
the hospital Wednesday morning in
good condition. Travis Wallace suffered
contusions to the head and was treated)
and released Sunday morning.
Travis Wallace was charged with
DWI by Burleson police in connection
with the mishap.
The worst accident in Texas during
the holiday weekend that ran from 6
p.m. Friday to midnight Monday occur-
red near Bay City where a three-car
wreck killed four persons. Five other
persons were injured in the wreck that
involved two vans and a pickup about
nine miles north of Bay City.

curred in the Burleson area last year.
The first was on May 22 when 10 tor-
nadoes were sighted west of Fort
Worth, one of which toppled a mobile
home, killing a woman. Only high winds
were experienced in Burleson.
Hurricane Alicia hit the Gulf Coast in
mid-August, swept over Houston, and
later on Aug. 17 moved over the Metro-
plex, bringing high winds, heavy rain,
and unusual low-80s afternoon
temperatures.
The torrid Texas summer was not all
that bad compared to the scorching 1980
heat wave. Only five days saw *
temperatures rise above 100 degrees in
the area. The highest mark in 1983 was
101 on Aug. 15, two days before Alicia
cooled off the area temporarily.
