Nursing Home Week noted
'W-^»
By DOTTIE WILSON
The administrators, staff,
and activities directors of
both of the local nursing
homes have been very busy
this week with special fes-
tivities in hdnor of National
Nursing Home Week, May
12-May 18. Residents and
their families have enjoyed
the many events, according
to Fay Kelly and Bernice
Dalton, activity directors of
Burleson Nursing Home and
Silver Haven Care Center
respectively.
Starting off the week with
a special touch, all the ladies
at both homes were treated
to corsages on Sunday, gifts
from F&M State Bank in
Burleson. Silver Haven and
Burleson Nursing Home
each had a special visit from
Mayor Jerry Boone on Mon-
day, where he signed proc-
lamations designating the
week in Burleson. At Silver
Haven that day residents al-
so enjoyed a sing-along with
'Ruth Belcher at the piano,
manicures for the ladies of
the home, and refreshments
Gospel music with David
Jones was also provided.
BURLESON Nursing
Home’s open house on Sun-
: ' day was well attended, and
the coffee reception for the
mayor on Monday was great-
ly enjoyed by the residents.
Ms. Kelly commented, “The
residents here really look
:. forward to meeting Burle-
son’s public officials. It helps
them feel more a part of the
community.”
Reece Prairie Baptist
Church members visited on
Tuesday af Burleson
Nursing Home and brought
gifts for the residents. That
afternoon a “popcorn and
lemonade” party was en-
joyed by all Wednesday
night a family night social
was scheduled.
A highlight of the week for
Silver Haven residents on
Tuesday was a tour and
tasting party at Pizza Inn.
: * ; Eighteen residents traveled
; :C by bus and became "official
' - "pizza makers” as they ob-
served how the pizzas were
-• made. An evening worship
service was conducted by
First Christian Church Tues-
Jj^.day night. A visit by the state
: : ^health department curtailed
: t activities somewhat on Wed-
~ l Tiesday, said Ms Dalton. But
that evening a special wor-
' "uShip service was sponsored
;”;_at Silver Haven by Crest-
• iimont Baptist Church.
Today (Thursday) is a big
day at both of the nursing
homes with activities filling
the day. A scavenger hunt
for both residents and em-
ployees at Silver Haven was
enjoyed this morning and at
2:30 p.m. the First United
Methodist Church presented
a special music program. A
pot luck supper, to be
brought in for Silver Haven
residents by the center’s vol-
unteers, will begin at 5:30
p.m. today, and at 7 p.m.
Harvey Moon will present
guitar songs and music for
the pleasure of the residents.
AT BURLESON Nursing
Home a special Bible study
was conducted this morning,
their monthly birthday party
took place in the afternoon,
and tonight residents will
enjoy country-western band
music and a dance. Bingo is
scheduled for Friday after-
noon, and on Saturday,
special church services will
conclude National Nursing
Home Week.
Ms Kelly commented that
a free blood pressure check
for the public was conducted
Monday along with the may-
or’s reception. The home’s
mascot and favorite dog,
Duchess, also attended
many of the week’s activ-
ities. “She is brought in for
most all activities except
meals or religious services.
Duchess has her own special
chair, where she stays dur-
ing activities, and the res-
idents can go by to pet and
visit with her. She’s a
healthy and happy dog, and
she brings a lot of joy to our
people here,” said Ms. Kelly.
ASSISTANT Activities
Director at Silver Haven,
Sue Renfro will be dressed in
her professional clown cos-
tume and make-up for a
visit to the First Baptist
Church Day Care Center on
Friday, said Ms. Dalton. Fri-
day evening will be the cul-
mination of the special week
of activities at Silver Haven,
when residents will enjoy a
dance scheduled at 7 p.m.
Ms. Dalton said music is
taken to the bedside of those
patients who are confined
there. A tape recorder, re-
cently donated by the Daugh-
ters of St. Ann Catholic
Church, helps make that pos-
sible, she added.
Our Burleson residents of
nursing homes are fortunate
to have administration and
staff who enjoy offering the
many special activities
which have taken place dur- Home Week. And Burleson is who love to stay active and
ing this week, in conjunc- also fortunate to have res- stay involved with the com-
tion with National Nursing idents of the nursing homes munity.
