Why joggers ache
AUSTIN, Texas (Spl.) - A
physical education professor
at The University of Texas
knows why runners and
joggers ache
Because he has diagnosed
hundreds of runners in UT’s
Rehabilitation Laboratory,
Prof Karl Klein says most
running problems occur
because one leg is shorter than
the other, ankles turn inward,
the tension between muscles
on the front and back of legs is
unbalanced, and many fail to
run "pigeon toed" (a toe-
inward position with the out-
side of the feet parallel).
He advises stretching exer-
cises for muscle flexibility
and, in the running shoe, heel
lifts (to balance posture) and
podiatry-designed devices (to
turn ankles outward).

Arlington Sam Houston
gave the Burleson Elks a
gentle but convincing 9-1
licking Tuesday night as the
teams completed the first
round of double round-robin
play
After half the district race
has been completed, the
Elks were left squarely in
the middle of a seven team
heap
Sam Houston, Arlington
and Arlington Bowie, whom
the Elks play Friday at
Bowie, share first place with
5-1 records. The Elks have a
3-3 mark and the other
three-Richland, Haltom
and Arlington Lamar-have
1-5 records
The teams are not playing
in halves as in basketball so
the team with the best
record after the remaining
six 4A-8 games will be
declared champion.

A FOUR-FUN second inn-
ing by Sam Houston did the
Elks in Tuesday.
Starting pitcher Bobby
Johnson yielded a leadoff
single, walked the next bat-
ter and hit the next with a
pitch to load the bases
The Texans twice hit to
shortstop Mike Jones who
fired to Carl Martin at the
plate to get outs but still
leave the bases loaded
Then the Texans unloaded
with a two-run single, got
the next batter safely to first
on one of five Elk errors and
then got two more runs on
another single.
Burleson got one run in
the second as Martin led off
with a single and Ken
Nicholson followed with
another single to left
Johnson then helped his
cause with a double that
scored Martin and left run-
ners on second and third
with none out But the Tex-
ans retired the next three
Elks without incident and
never let Burleson score
again

** -WE HAD OUR chances
to score but we just couldn't
get the hit when we needed
it,” said Coach Bud Miller.
In the third inning, Jeff
Timmons singled with one
out and went to second on an
error Ricky Russell singled
him to third and Nicholson,
who had a perfect day at the
plate, walked with two outs.
But Texan hurler Robert
Chapa got one of eight
strikeouts to again retire the
Elks.
Houston clinched the vic-
tory in the fourth with three
more runs, thanks to some
more Burleson mistakes.
Johnson walked the first
two Texan batters and after
getting the third to ground
back to the mound, saw a
shot get through the infield
for another error.
Two singles then chased
home three more runs
before Johnson put the fire
out.

JASPER CASTILLO
came on to relieve Johnson
in the fifth after the Elk
starter hand yielded a single
and walked a batter.
Castillo was greeted by two
singles and a walk that sent
home a run before getting

WHO USES WATER?
-Some 30 billion gallons of
water are produced every day
by public water systems in
the United States. This aver-
ages out to about 168 gallons
per person daily.
The following figures, pro-
vided by the American Water
Works Association, tell who
uses the water.
About 65 gallons go to
residential use. This is the
water we use for drinking,
cooking, bathroom and gar-
dening.
Industries account for 53
gallons a day. However, many
industries provide much of
their own water through pri-
vate welts.
Commercial establishments
like grocers, barber shops and
restaurants consume 20 gal-
lons.
Fifteen gallons per day go
to public uses. Included here
are fire fighting, street clean-
ing, pools and the like.
Finally, about 15 gallons of
water ia loat, mostly through
leaks and breaks in under-
ground pipelines.
At 30 billion gallons per
day, more water Is manufac-
tured than any other product.
