Strong winds often accompany cold fronts that push
throu^i Texas this time of year. Strong, gusty winds mean
rough water in open water impoundments
If you should lose power of your big motor in rough water
don’t panic. Grab your paddle and keep your boat headed up-
wind into the waves. Then rig a sea anchor by tieing your
minnow bucket to a line fastened to the front of the boat The
bucket dragging in the water will keep you headed into the
waves.
In a bad storm get ashore anywhere you can. The best way
if possible is to run downwind. Timing your speed so that you
can ride the crest of a wave. As soon as you hit bottom, tilt
your motor up and get out fast Pull your boat as far out of the
water as you can and turn the nose of the craft into the waves
so that it won’t get filled with water

yard loss. But Ward Whites
came back and gained 3 and
2 yards to leave a fourth-and-
one situation.
Bowie couldn’t wait out a
long shap and jumped off-
sides. giving Burleson
another first down.
Perkins stepped back and
lofted a 23-yard toss to
Richard Osteen as both the
passer and receiver were
under pressure as they made
the play.
The conversion kick failed
as the snap from center was
low.
A fumble—Burleson’s only
turnover of the night—spoil-
ed the next venture into
Bowie territory and even-
tually left the Elks with field
position problems.
Franke, not one to
overlook a mistake, dashed
3H yards for another score
midway through the third
period to make Bowie's lead
a little more comfortable at
21-6.

AFTER JOHNSON return
ed the kickoff to the 34, the
Elks moved quickly to
another touchdown.
Perkins hit Harvey for 11
yards to bring the ball into
Bowie territory and a
22-yard penalty on a Perkins
pass to Whites brought the
ball to the 20.
Whites carried the rest of
the time, going 5, 13, 1 and
finally 1 yard again for the
touchdown.
Perkins passed under
heavy pressure to Osteen for
the two-point conversion and
Bowie led only 21-14.
"That was a heck of play
on Lance's part to get loose
and be able to throw the
ball,” Bixler said.
Bowie proved it could pass
at times, getting off a
43-yard bomb from Tommy
Steele to Eric Hudson for
another touchdown. Scott
Tennison kicked the conver-
sion and Bowie led 28-14.
Burleson's next possession
got to Bowie’s 20 before a
motion penalty and a per-
sonal foul moved them out of
field goal and first down
range.

AFTER RICHARD Os
teen, who punted for a
35-yard average, got off a
39-yarder, Allan Nichols in
tercepted a first-down Bowie
pass to give the Elks new
life.
But a touchdown was not
to be. Perkins was sacked
for a 21-yard loss on first
down. He passed to Osteen
, fpr 11 and an interference
L fcaff brought the ball back to
the 20 where David Fowler
missed on a 37-yard field
goal try as time ran out in
the first half.
The pace slowed in the se-
cond half as defenses
dominated for most of the
third quarter.
Burleson seemed to have
the momentum for much of
the third quarter, picking up
three first downs on a drive
quarterbacked by Coleman
who has been spelling
Perkins some in recent
games to pick up experience.
Big plays in a drive that
started at Burleson's 18 were
a 15-yard pass to Ford and
a 16-yard pass to Harvey
before that drive stalled
The Elks had reached mid-
field before they had to punt
and Osteen's boot was down-
ed at the Bowie 13 Franke
was tossed for a three-yard
loss by Hutson on first down
and Elks fans began to think
upset.
Franke quickly changed
the tune racing 90 yards
through the middle for t,he
Elk defense for another
touchdown to put his salty
Volunteers ahead 35-14.
Still the Elks didn't quit.
With Perkins at the throttle,
Johnson dashed 3, Whites
went six and an 11-yard pass
from Perkins to Ford offset a
5-yard Elk penalty. Perkins
went 10 and tossed to Cox for
a 4-yard gain as he was being
trapped by Bowie pursuers
to bring the ball the 20
A personal foul call
brought the ball to the 10
where Whites ran in for the
score. The snap from center
was again bad but Coleman
rolled left and passed back to
Osteen for two more points
‘‘It’s an automatic pass
anytime you have trouble
with the center snap," Bixler
said ‘ Bryan and Richard
both did a good job of ex
ecuting."
With the score 35-22,
momentum again returned
to Burleson's side when
Burleson tied one game
and lost another in freshman
action Thursday against
Central Junior High.
The B team finished in an
8-8 tie as Terry Mercer
scored on a quarterback
sneak with no time left on the
clock.
Mercer was hit on the op-
tion on the two-point conver-
sion play but Wade Davis
picked up his errant pitch
and raced in for the score to
tie the game at 8-8.
Central had scored its
touchdown in the first half.
The Elks dominated play
in the second half, keeping
the ball most of the way but
couldn’t score until the final
seconds
Byron McDonald led the
defense.
Central won the A game
13-8.
The Elks scored first on a
27-yard run around left end
by Peter Galupi in the first
quarter. The conversion kick
was blocked but they led 6-0.
Cnetral scored in the se-
cond quarter and added the
conversion to take a 7-6
halftime lead
Central scored again on a
55-yard run in the third
period but missed the extra
point to hold a 13-6 lead
The Elks threatened to go
Defense Not Enough
For JV Against Bowie
Man cannot survive on
defense alone.
The junior varsity found
that out Thursday as they
fell to Arlington Bowie 21-0
at Elk Stadium.
Bowie built a 14-0 halftime
lead and scored one more
touchdown in the final half to
take the win.
"The defense was real
fired up,” said Elk coach Bill
Bixler. "They were real ag
gressive.
