Love Snow, But Yechh!
Veda Calicott wore the wrong shoes for treeking across Ellison Friday morning.
Snow boots were the order of the day when the lovely white stuff turned to ir-
ritating brown slush in the streets.
The Burleson area received between
two and six inches of snow Thursday
night and Friday morning as a cold
front bringing Canadian air passed
through the region.
Weather forecasters on Thursday had
predicted that there would be no ac-
work or school Friday morning were
met with several inches of snow on their
lawns and cars.
Russell Lace of Burleson, a weather
reporter for the National Weather Ser-
vice, reported Friday morning that he
had measured five inches of snow in his
official gauge. C
Other parts of Texas received greater
amounts of snowfall Amarillo reported
over six inches of snow and the bad
weather caused an estimated 200 traffic
accidents. Wichita Falls and Abilene
also reported greater precipitation than
was received in the Fort Worth-Dallas
Thursday night s snowfall was the
first significant snow to be recorded in
Burleson in nearly two years. Last
winter was unusually mild with no
temperature under 25 degrees and only
two days of snow flurries The Burleson
area received an inch of snow on Jan
13, 1983, the day after suffering through
an ice storm that closed schools and
forced postponement of high school
basketball games
Fortunately, there was no ice in
Thursday’s snow and Burleson police
reported only one significant accident
on Friday. One person was treated at
Huguley Hospital from injuries receiv-
ed in a two-car accident at the intersec-
tion of Newton and Warren.
A CAR DRIVEN by Duana Stewart
Fehse, 34, of Burleson was eastbound
on S.E. Newton when it was unable to
stop at the stop sign at Warren because
of the slippery street and was struck by
a car driven by Margaret M. Bull-
A passenger in the second vehicle.
Shannon K Bullington, 15, of Burleson
was taken to Huguley Hospital by
Regional Ambulance where he was
treated for a contusion of the head and
released Fehse and one of her
passengers, Jeffery S Fehse, 10, of
were not treated
The Bullington car suffered major
damage and the Fehse vehicle sustain-
ed moderate damage, according to the
police report
Not counting Thursday's snow, this
month has seen 38 inches of precipita
tion, less than average for the last
month of the year. The precipitation
from January through November this
year has been 23.29 inches and unless
the Burleson area gets inundated with
snow or rain the last two weeks of
December this year is destined to be
one of the driest in the last three
decades.
The last really dry year was 1956
when Burleson showed only 19.84 inches
of precipitation The yearly average of
precipitation for Burleson is just over
30 inches.
LACK OF precipitation has not been
a problem in the Rockies and Upper
Midwest, both regions of which have
been hit by four snowstorms before the
official start of winter Dec 22.
The latest storm dumped nearly two
feet of new snow in parts of Utah and
Colorado. The November and Decem-
ber snowstorms caused Minneapolis-St.
Paul and Omaha to set records for an-
nual snowfall. Minneapolis-St. Paul
received 3 4 inches of snow Thursday
for 95 1 inches in the calendar year of
1983. Omaha has recorded 64 1 inches
this year
The wind chill in parts of North
Dakota was 60 below zero as winds blew
at 40 miles per hour Two persons died
because of the cold weather late last
week, one in Mandan, N.D., and the
