It’s a girt!
SILVER SENIORS

Once upon a time, a handsome young man gave his
bride-to-be a tablecloth which she lovingly placed in
her cedar hope chest for safe keeping. Last Saturday,
the couple celebrated 70 years of marriage with an
anniversary dinner spread on that very tablecloth.
Sam and Kathryn Self were married in Elida, New
Mexico on August 24, 1922. He was 25; she was 18.
In 1946 the couple moved their family to Dublin and a
house on Live Oak Street, where they have lived ever
since.
Although both came from ranching families, Sam
worked as an automobile mechanic for five different
dealerships in DeLeon until his retirement, and Kathryn
worked as a nurses aide in a local nursing home for IS
years. He is also a World War I veteran.
The storybook romance produced five children,
though one child died in infancy and another as a
young teenager. The Selfs children include Lewis
Aaron Self of League City; Sammy Louise Jones of
Dublin; and Tyre Self of Tomball. At last count, the
couple had nine grandchildren, six great-grandchil-
dren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
For the last four months, Sam has lived in a nursing
home in Temple, having suffered three strokes. But
he is doing well, and his son Lewis is convinced that
his parents will celebrate their 75th anniversary.
Kathryn's advice to other couples who want to stay
married as long as she has is to "just go ahead and
live” and “give and take.”
But even at age 95 her husband couldn't let her get
away with that one. “Yeah, I give and she takes,’
Sam quipped, his eyes sparkling.
Not to be outdone, Kathryn produced the annivers-
ary card she had given her husband. “Love endures
all things,” the card read, “even when you (she
marked out “hog all the covers”) gripe.”
Looks like a sense of humor is also a key
ingredient to marriages that “live happily evef after.”

Another wonderful week has
gone and if we take time to look
back, we realize how many bless-
ings God gave us. Isn’t it wonderful
to have Him look out for us every
minute?
Several of our group attended
Vivian Kite’s birthday party on
August 22nd. Vivian looked great
and everyone was so glad to see
her.
Most of us have watched the
Hurricane Andrew news and I’m
sure several others have ridden out
hurricanes at one time or another.
In 1961 I lived in Galveston and we
stayed on the Island when Carla
came through, and for a country
girl, that was really an experience! v
Our group is still enjoying our
visitation, games, painting and of
course, the good food. We always
have wonderful food, so we must
have the best cooks. Maybe it’s
because we all have so much
experience.
We will have to celebrate a
birthday for Betty Stephenson at a
later date. She was out of town due
to illness in her tamily. Hoj>e she
will be back with us soon.
Time is short this week, so will
give you more news next week.
Thought for the week: “People
cannot change the truth, but truth
can change people.’’
