Riding Club seeks city’s
help in arena light repair
The Dublin Riding Club, besieged
with vandalism and weather pro-
blems at their riding arena, is
seeking assistance from the City of
Dublin.
Several of the problems have
posed safety hazards for the
youngsters who ride in the events,
according to club spokesmen.
Club officials wrote letters to
Mayor Keith Nichols, all council
members, City Manager David
Johnson and Park Manager David
Morgan this week seeking assis-
tance to replace faulty lighting.
Several of the club members are
also expected to appear before the
city council during their special
committee meeting Aug. 25 or the
regular September meeting.
The arena, located in the south-
west comer of the City Park, is the
site of the riding club’s horse shows
every third Saturday of the month
which attracts riders and their fam-
ilies from several area communities.
At a recent event, wiring in the
arena lights shorted out, sending a
shower of sparks over the arena,
scaring horses as well as their
young riders, according to club
members.
The following month, the lights
blacked out completely as a young
participant was running her horse at
top speed in a barrel race.
No injuries resulted in cither
instance but several events had to
be canceled because of the risk of
injury.
Another show is scheduled for
Saturday but only about half of the
events can be ran with the inade-
quate lighting, spokesmen said.
Riding Club members recently
spent two days working to repair
damage caused by vandals only to
have die vandals hit again.
Riding Club members will ask the
City Council to provide new light
poles and lights as well as to have
the old wiring and poles removed.
Dublin Riding Club officers are
Mauncll Harris and Mike and Mary
Ann Roberson. Club events are
family oriented for all ages.
The arena is also available to
individuals oilier than club members
to use throughout the year.
MOP SALE
The annual Lions Club Mop and
Broom Sale will be held all day
Sept. 2 at the comer of East
Blackjack and Patrick St. by John-
son’s Gift Shop. Proceeds benefit
children in need of eyeglasses.
COMMODITIES
..Commodities will be distributed
Monday, Sept. 19.
Bryan and Greg Lanting are two of the youngsters who take part in
the Dublin Riding Club's events at the city park arena. They are the
sons of Bruce and Kari Lanting.

To Fire Chief Janies Fritts:
Late on die afternoon of Aug. 11
1 had the opportunity to take two
boys, ages 7 and 10, by the smoul-
dering ruins of a house fire. One of
them was recently caught playing
with matches by his mother. The
reason for showing them the burned
out house was to impress upon
them just what devastation and
destruction fire (and matches) can
produce.
1 beckoned to Firefighter C.E.
Malone. He came out of the burned
out house and approached me. I
explained to him that the 7-year-old
boy had been playing with matches
and that I wanted him to see just
what a fire could do.
C.E. knelt down in front of the
young boys and explained the
dangers of playing with matches.
He was very professional, straight
forward and impressive. On the way
home, all the boys could talk about
was the risk of playing with
matches.
1 was very impressed and pleased
with the way your fireman conduc-
ted himself. He deserves a pat on
the back and so do you for having
that quality of a firefighter as a
member of Dublin’s fire depart-
ment.
Sincerely,
Dr. Don Stewart

It all began when a little girl,

moved off the farm and into Dublin
where she enrolled in school.
“School had already started when I
got there. The children were writ-

board.
“I could print, but I couldn't
write. So I printed the word." The
teacher insisted she write the word.
When the "new kid in school"
scrawled it on the blackboard as
best she could, the teacher shook
her so hard she almost lost her
balance, remembers Mrs. Willing-

“After that, I just hated school,"
she says. It wasn’t until she discov-
