TO ADVERTISE! *
THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH.
Article. A *
"LET US SPEAK WHERE THE BIBLE SPEAKS AND
BE SILENT WHERE THE BIBLE IS SILENT!"
The confession of faith of the church of Christ la not In
a set of rules; It Is In the divine sonship of the Lord Jeeus
Christ. Our creed Is Christ. We believe In Him as the Son of
God. We believe Jesus Christ to be a good man; a good teacher,
a great philosopher; a great ruler; but our belief in Him goes
much farther than all this. A man might believe all of these
and yet be rp infidel. In. fact, oparty all infidels acknowledge
Jesus to this extent. We believe Jesus to be “the Christ, the
Son of the living God.” This is the confession made by the
apostle Peter. (Matt. 16:16-19,' It la the fame confession made
by God. the Esther, when Jesus was baptised. (Matt. 3:16. 17.)
It Is the same confession made by God when Jesus was trans-
figured (Matt. 17:3.) It was this same confession that Jesus
made himself, and it cost Him His life. It Is the confession
made by the Ethiopian eunuch. (Acts 8:36-38.) It is the con-
fession made by all the early Christians. (Rom. MW, 10.)
» Belief in Jesus as the Christ, the Spn of the Living God,
means that He is much more than a good man, a great teacher,
a* great philosopher, and a great ruler. It means that He n
divine; that He is God Incarnate. It means that He was, and
Is, perfect In all His .ways — a, perfect teacher, a perfect
philosopher, a perfect ruler. It means that He If our King
supreme. He‘is supreme in His nature and character, wisdom
and judgment, authority and power, and decisions. In matters
of religion. He is our only teacher, Saviour, lawgiver, ruler
and judge.
We believe In our public officials. We do not regard them
as infallible; neither do they claim such. But believing In them
as our official representatives, we accept their decisions and
judgment. But Jesus is more than man. He did not obtain His
office and His authority from men. They are HI* within His
own right — not by any decree, nor by any gift from man. They
belong to Him in the absolute sense. He la one wMh the Falber
— He la God — and as such all things are of Him. He Is the
beginning of wisdom, fee giver of life; the creator of good, the
spring of joy, the fountain of love, the source of righteousness,
the embodiment of truth, fee originator of all pdher, fee star
of hope, and tha, fulfillment of all our dreams.
Believing in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, we are guided
by His teachings, we are governed by bis laws, we abide by
His decrees aud are judged by His words His commandments
are right, His ways are infallible, and His decisions are
infallible. Whatever He does Is right, whatever He says is
true, whatever He bids us do is necessary.
We believe the Bible not because of some tradition which
has grown up around it; we believe,, the Bible because it is
a revelation of the mind of God.
The Old Testament scriptures were never intended as a
law to Christians. TTie Old Testament paved the way for fee
coming of the Christ, and the preparation, of fee world for
Christianity. The Old Testament teas much the inspired wont
of God as is the New Testament, but If we want td knqw how
to become Christians, how to worship feed- as Christians, and
how to live as Christian, we must turn to fee New Testament.
The Old Testament had a place and a mission in fee world,
which place and mission it nerved; but now feat fee New
Testament has been given,, and the law of Christ Jews made
known, we must go to it to learn our duty to God today. There
are some things commanded in the Old Testament which no
man has ever been able to understand, such as looking to a
brazen serpent on a pole, offeringjbof ifimal sacrifices, er the
burning of incense. Nevertheless, Ood commanded these things
through Moses. If we accept Jesus as "fee Christ, fee Son of
fee living Ool," then we must accept HI* commandments as
the commands of God. If wef reject His command menu, then
we reject Him as the Son of God.
Why Jesus Christ commanded people to be baptized when
He Ga«i the Great CommisOton (Matt. 28:1040, Mark 16:13.16'
we do not know. Nevertheless. He did. We do not contend
fervently for baptism because we think, any more of U than „
any* other commandment. Our reason for contending that men
must be baptized
la the Christ, the
baptism, saying,
saved.”

saved is that we
