ce mom, there's nothing to do."
Any mother who hasn’t heard that statement from her proliferous
_ progeny along about the middle of the good ol' hot, scorching summertime (hon-
est, it only seems you've progencrated more proliferously during the summertime) must have
given birth to Robocop.
All kids get bored in the summertime because, after the novelty of being out of school
wears off, there's nothing for them to do other than hang around the house and wear on mom's
nerves (hey, everybody has to be somewhere, don't they?). Even fish get bored in the summer
when they're not swimming in "schools." Even insects get bored when they're not vacationing
in roach motels (that’s why they "bore" into your favorite fruit trees or make sawdust of some
of the essential "boards" in your home).
There's nothing to do in the sum-
mertime. And surely, if you're a kid,
there's no more boring place to have
to spend your summertime than
Burleson. Right?
Wrong, humdrum breath.
There arc no boring places, only
boring people (and boring newspaper
articles in oilier newspapers, particu-
larly competing newspapers). And
certainly with their imagination,
Burleson kids don't spend too much
of their time in the boardroom (sorry
about that one) driving their mothers
crazy. Or is that why so many women
work outside the home these days?
And petition for year-round school
terms?
Be that as it may, there's no rea-
son for any kid in Burleseq to sit
around the house day in andTtay out
watching reruns of old Deputy Dawg
cartoons on television. There's plenty
to do. All right, there's plenty to do if
100 degree heat, the fear of heat ex-
haustion, the threat of skin cancer
(and the heartbreak of wet arm pits)
don't intimidate you.
In fact, many summer activities
