Center gets new director, facilities
The Burleson Pregnancy Aid Cen-
ter has a new director and will soon
have newly remodeled facilities.
During its regular monthly meet-
ing, the Burleson Pregnancy Aid
Center's (BPAC) Boad of Directors
chose a new director and assistant
director for the center.
The new director, Louann Hart, has
lived in Burleson since 1984 and
began working as a volunteer coun-
selor at the center in 1989. In 1990,
Hart became the assistant director
and has been acting director since
July of this year.
Michelle Perry, the new assistant
director, moved to this area from
Mississippi in 1990. She is currently
working on her masters degree in
Church Social Services and Social
Work at Southwesteren Baptist
Theological Seminary in Fort Worth.
Ms. Perry has been a volunteer coun-
selor at the center since 1990.
Both of these women, and a staff of
volunteer counselors, are available
from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Mon-
day through Friday, and 9:30 a.m.
until Noon on Saturday, to perform
free confidential pregnancy tests.
The Center is remodeling its facili-
ties in order to better serve the needs
of the community. In one month the
BPCA counsels approximately 130
clients. Because of this, the previ-
ously four-room counseling center
will soon become a 10-room facility
equipped to provide all necessary
services for the clients.
The BPAC is a non-profit ministry
that is funded by area churches as
well as private donations from vari-
ous businesses, organizations, and
individuals. This enlargement of the

BPAC is a prime example of people
voluntarily giving of their time and
money. Area businessmen Rick
Roper of Roper Electric, Bill Horn of
Horn Commercial Refrigeration, and
Robbie Mayse of Kennedale Plumb-
ing are donating all or part of their
services to further the completion of
the remodeling. On Sept. 7, the im-
provements on the center officially
began with the tearing down of old
and the rebuilding of new walls.
Despite the remodeling, the BPAC
is still open to the public for free
pregnancy tests and counseling. The
center is located at 509-D SW
Wilshire across from Braum’s. The
telephone number is 295-4101.

Wilshire.
Students across Texas will be
taking the Texas Assessment of Aca-
demic Skills (TAAS) test next week
and with this in mind, the Burleson
High School counseling center has
come up with some test taking tips.
They are:
—Prepare well in advance.
Avoid last minute cramming and get
plenty of rest the night before the test.
—Eat a good breakfast that is
high in protein and low in liquids.
—Know the time and place of
the test. Know what supplies to bring
and arrive early.
—Don't talk about the test. Avoid
negative talk and maintain a low
anxiety level. Regard lapse of mem-
ory as normal.
—Plan your approach. Ascer-
tain point values and time limits and
then look over the test and divide the
time.
—Ask for clarification. Make
certain that you fully understand the
instructions. If you don't understand,
ask questions about the directions
and procedures.
—Approach the test with deter-
mination to do your best. Read ques-
tions fully before answering them
and don't linger too long on any one
question. Re-read all questions with
negatives such as "except" in them
and check for qualifying words such
as "sometime, never, always." Be
cautious about changing answers and
watch for grammatical matchup of
tenses.
—Reduce anxiety through ac-
tivity. Go on to the next question if
you draw a blank. Jot down informa-

Pause, put your test aside, and breathe
deeply. Make sure you are sitting
upright with your legs uncrossed.
—Pay attention to the test. Don't

finishing earlier. And most impor-
tantly, don't give an impression of
cheating.

be given Tuesday, Oct. 8; the reading
portion, Wednesday, Oct. 9; and the
mathematics portion, Thursday, Oct.
10. All students in grades three, five,
seven, nine, and 11 will take the test.
Students must pass the test to
graduate from high school, even if
they have passing grades. According
to Counselor Mel Earnest, only a
handful of students in the past few
years have been prevented from grad-
uating because they have failed the
T A AS lest. The test is given twice a
j ear (so a junior has four times to
pass it before he will be prevented
from graduating). If a student fails
only a portion of the TAAS test, then
he can retake that Dortion next time.
