New Trainers
Roam the
Sidelines at BHS
There is a new crop of student trainers standing by at the Elks and Lady
Elks sporting events at Burleson High School this year. The year's high
school trainers are (front row, I to r) Monica Akins, Rachel Gordon, and
Christina EvartL The middle row includes Karen Milburn, Gennifer
Gossett, Mandy Sch walk, and April Williams. Standing in back are Scott
Smith and head trainer Roddy Smith.
(133 yards on 18 carries) and full-
back John Carlson (1Q1 yards on 10
carries)," Whites said.
Kevin Milson played at quarter-
back and completed two passes for
65 yards, including a 50 yard touch-
down pass to Keen.
The Elks drove 82 yards on their
first possession for a 7-0 lead. Carlson
scored on a 5-yard dive at right tackle
and Daniel Morris kicked the point
after.
In the second quarter, Harwood
tied up the game. Burleson got the
ball back late in that same quarter
after taking over on downs with just
52 seconds on the clock. The Elks
preceded to march 67 yards in three
plays and reclaimed the lead.
"It was a great team effort,"
Whites said.
Freshman B team breaks
even with Harwood
The ninth grade Black team
played its best game of the season,
according to Whites, and the end
result was an 8-8 standoff against
Harwood.
Harwood took the lead in the
first quarter and earned two on the
PAT. Burleson's score came on a 12-
yard pass from Troy Page to Jason
Jones in the third quarter. Elo Quane-
sanvanh ran for the two point conver-
sion and the score was knotted at 8.
The Elks threatened to score
again late in the fourth quarter, but
were turned back by a pass intercep-
tion in the end zone.
Whites said the Elks' defense
was led by Jordan Jones, Tom Wade,
and Justin Walls.
During the game, Burleson car-
ried the ball 32 times for 149 yards.
The Elks accumulated 30 yards
through their air attack, completing
two of six attemps.
Harwood picked up 117 yards
on 40 carries and misfired on four
passing attempts for no yardage.
The tie with Harwood moves the
Elks a step in the right direction,
making the team's record 0-3-1.
Eighth grade White team
levels record at 1-1
After gaining 185 yards total
offense, 10 fust downs, and two
touchdowns, the Burleson Elks eighth
grade White team defeated the Cle-
burne Yellow Jackets 12-6.
The Elks took the opening kick-
off and scored on their opening drive.
Smith completed a 20-yard pass to
Brunson for the touchdown. Burle-
son's second score came with 14
seconds left in the game when John
Houston scored from three yards out
on a dive play.
Clebume put its points on the
board in the fust quarter, but could
not overcome the Elk defense for
additional points. The Yellow Jack-
ets finished the game with 110 yards
total offense, including a pass com-
pletion worth 10 yards. Cleburne's
quarterback was intercepted once by
Houston.
Seventh grade Red team
ties with Kargaroos
After a 6-6 tie with Weatherford,
the Burleson Elks seventh grade Red
team improved its record to 0-1-1.
Burleson kicked off the scoring when
quarterback Justin Cramer hit Jack
Morris with a 25-yard scoring strike.
On the ensuing kick off, the Kanga-
roos rambled down to the Elk 15 yard
line and then on the following play
scored with a sweep off of the right
tackle to tie the game.
The little Elks marched into
Kangaroo territory early in the fust
quarter, but then ran out of downs.
Defensively in the first quarter,
the Elks were tremendous, said the
Burleson coaches. The Elks put up
two goal line stands to stop the Kan-
garoos offensive attack in the fust
period.
"Our defense played excellent,"
said Burleson coach James Weller.
"We are taking steps in the right
direction. They made the plays when
it was necessary. Offensively and
defensivley we played well enough
to win, but once again, we had a
letdown on specialty teams. We will
improve that part of our game."
Burleson rushed for 120 yards in
the contest and picked up an addi-
tional 45 yards in pass completions.
Weatherford shuts out
seventh grade Black team
The Burleson Elks seventh grade
Black team was restricted to but 50
yards offense and five first downs
against Weatherford on Sept. 24,
falling 22-0 to the Kangaroos. Weath-
erford picked up 140 yards rushing
on 40 carries and scored touchdowns
in the first, third, and fourth quarters.
"We had trouble getting on
track," said Burleson coach David
Adams. "We just never clicked.
Weatherford had a very good ball
club. They were big and quick."
Offensive standouts for the Elks
were fullback Abraham Herrera and
backup quarterback Tim Wells, said
Adams. Defensive tackle Jason Hamil
and Wells, at linebacker, were defen-
sive standouts.

4,15-8.
"It is very difficult to play a 6-2
offense when the opponents are hit-
ting the ball back over with one hit”
Burleson coach Susan Bloom said.
"We lost the first game, but came
back strong defensively to win the
next two games. I am very proud of
the girls for pulling together and
winning this match. But we still need
a whole lot of serving work."
Overall, the Lady Elks served
accurately on 66 percent Burleson
served best in the third game at 68
percent and bottomed out at 64 per-
cent in the first game.
Stand-out players on the Lady
Elks' side of the net were plenty, ac-
cording to Bloom. "Lindsey Valdez
and Kristen Lilly hnth hustled and
served well," Bloom said. "Rhonda
Johnson and Andrea Novelle both
hustled and gave good court play."
Lady Elks serving for points
include Valdez, lOpoints; Lilly, nine;
Johnson, five; Melynn Gresak, four;
Novelle, four; Honor Parks, two; Sara
Colbert, one; Courtney Parker, one;

The win over Weatherford im-
proves the Lady Elks' record to 3-0.
Eighth grade B team
wallops Weatherford
In two quick games, the Lady
Elks eighth grade B team walloped
Weatherford 15-8,15-3 for their sec-
ond win of the season.
"The girls did an excellent job of
passing the ball to their targets," said
Burleson coach Lori Wolfe. "One of
our goals was to increase our serving
percentage from last week's game
and we did. I was pleased with the
girls' performance."
Outstanding players for Burle-
son in the match were Nancy Jarmie
and Kelli Gerstner. "Nancy saved the
ball on the third pass five times and
she had an 89 percent serving aver-
age," Wolfe said. "Kelli had awe-
some spikes and had an ace serve."
The Lady Elks served true on 58
percent of their attempts in the first
game and 77 percent in the second
game for an overall 68 percent accu-
racy. Jarmie hit on 89 percent of her
attempts for 15 points and Mandy
Truex hit 78 percent for five points.

with 75 percent accuracy and Leanne
Finley scored three points. Andrea
Elwood and Kelli Gerstner each

Seventh grade A team drops
Weatherford in two games
They were close games, but when
it was all over, Burleson's seventh
grade A team prevailed over Weath-
erford 15-12, 17-15, stretching its
winning streak to three games.
"The girls handled the pressure
like real pros,” Burleson coach Re-
becca Conly said. "They never gave
up and their hard work payed off."
Conly said Lady Elk serving was
weak at 64 percent, but the Lady Elks
did a great job of using three-hk
combinations and had a lot of sets
and attacks.
"Amanda Foreman had three
awesome spikes and Tiffany Esters
had eight outstanding floor spikes,"
Conly said. "Jessica McCullors and
Maria Paz each gave excellent set-

Lady Elks seventh grade B team pro-
tected its unblemished record, bump-
ing it up to 3-0. Scores in the match
were 15-12, 5-15,15-8.
"The girls started out a little slug-
gish and our serving was not up to
par," Burleson coach Andrea Tatum
conunented. "But, they did show a lot
of heart and came back and won in
three games."
Lady Elks serving for points were
Kristy Carpenter, 12 points; Tanya
