were read by Vice-Chairman Mrs. the county appoint a civil defense
leader.
Miss Guthrie announced that she
would give a demonstration on
food preservation March 14. There
were 22 members, 5 officers, and 6
visitors present.
The extended drought has reduc-
ed the reserve food supply that
pasture plants normally store in
their crown and root system.
Since new spring growth is depend-
ent upon this stored fdbd, proper
management of pastures in the
spring is very important. / Little
or no grazing should be allowed
until tlie plants have made good
growth.

APC Practices
Are Geared to
New Production
In planning crops to meet defense
needs this year, farmers of Jackson
County should keep in mind that
the needs for the future muy be Just
us great as for tills year, says Arn-
old Koop, chairman of the county
P M A Committee. Every farmer
should do all lie can to produce the
crops uceded but Increase la culti-
vated crops should be made where
they will uot impair future produc-
tlou.
This mouns, says the chairman,
that good productive pasture should
uot be plowed up to obtain increases
of other crops when the other crops
will not contribute any more to
defense tliuu the production which
comes from, the pasture.
Nor should termers abandon good
conservation practices for temporary
increases in production, in the
opinion of t he chairman. "For tho
long pull, conservation farming will
result lu higher production than tho
temporary guins that may bo ob-
tained at the expense of tho land,”
lie said.
As the chairman sees it, the
formula is simple: Keep up the
fertility of the luud. Conserve alt
possible moisture. Use grass and
legumes to restore and maintain
the organic mutter In the soil.
The agricultural conservation pro-
gram this year, ho points out, is
particularly emphasizing the use of
grasses and legumes as a meaus of
protecting the soil for continued
abundance. To the eud assistance
is provided for seeding grasses and
legumes and for practices which as-
sure good stands and good growth.
Where lime jihosphute is needed be-
fore the farmer cun obtain a good
stand of clover or alfalfa the pro-
gram provides for sharing tho cost
of these materials.
The chairman explains that the
program is available to ull farmers
this year, not only to help produce
what Is needed for defense, but also
to keep the laud in, condition for
continued production.! The county
1’MA office, where information
about 1951 practices can be obtain-
ed, is located ut the Jackson Coun-
ty Agricultural Building in Edna.

| ness matters in the county seat Sat-
urday. The Herald office acknowl-
edges a pleasant call from him. ,
these symptoms change from nor-
mal, it may be considered a sigual
of distress.
Too much or too little desire for
food, too much or too little dimi-
nution of- waste materials, too much
or too little energy may all come
under the classification of excesses
or defieleucles, fullness or empti-
ness that the body responds to
with discomfort.
Appetite or the lack of appetite
may have a definite bearing upon
all the excesses of the body. The
overweight person seldom dislikes
food and will normally like to eat
to the extent that he pluces u bur-
den upon the whole digestive tract.
The person who is underweight
will nomrully complain of lack of
appetite or of a finicky dislike of
certain foods to the extent that the
digestive tract may suffer. When
these normal symptoms are revers-
ed or when the appetite varies i
from normul to the extent of either
ehivlugs for food or aversion to 4-
food, there Is room for suspicion,
of a threat to health.
Disorders originating in the1
stomach or intestines may reduce,
or Interfere, with appetite and dis-
eases affecting thu glands of the!
body an ay create either constant I
hunger or u real aversion to food. j
