for Saturday night, Sept. 21
Angi Vassar was selected over-
all winner in Mound Elementary's
"What Grandparents Are" essay
competition. Vassar is a 5th grade
student at Mound Elementary. Other
winners include: Bailey Sanderson,
first grade; Amanda McFall, 2nd
grade; Jennifer Gillaspy, 3rd grade;
Bobbye Thompson, 4th grade, and
Michael Rasor, 6th grade.
My Grandparents

My grandparents are the best in
the world because they love me, and
spend time with me. They take me
out to lunch and go swimming with
our family. They love me and they
show it, too! I love them a lot like
they love me! If it wasn’t for God I
would not have such a wonderful
Papa and Granny's! They've loved
me since the minute I was bom. I
thank God for such wonderful, won-
derful grandparents. My grandpar-
ents are very loving, kind, and giv-
ing! They are also very caring! That
means a lot! You can talk to them
about anything and they are there for
you! I love them a lot and much,
much more!
Business women
will have booth
at Ocktoberfest
For the second year the Burle-
son Charter Chapter of the American
Business Women's Association will
have a booth at the Ocktoberfest,
Oct. 5-6 at the Tarrant County Con-
vention Center. The members will
sell "pink things," and lemonade.
Proceeds from the fund-raising
will be used to award scholarships to
deserving women in the community.
Advanced purchased tickets are
$3, at the door, $4. Contact Vicky
Courtney at 295-6254 or Barbara
Anderson 292-1086 to purchase tick-
ets before Sept. 25.
Please stop by the ABWA Ock-
toberfest booth and enjoy some lem-
onade or ice cream.
Burleson ninth grader Shawn
Bailey will be appearing Saturday,
Sept. 21, at 7:30 pm., on the B urleson
Jamboree. Bailey, who is a member
of the Junior High Show Choir, also
appears regularly on all area oprys
including the Johnnie High Show. •
Bailey just returned from Bran-
som, Mo., where he spent all summer
appearing with Kids-N-Kountry at
the Bob-O-Link Theater.
In addition to Bailey, other fea-
ture performers this week include:
Richie Cooley, Mary McFarlin,
-Tamara Joslin, Mike Bragg, Annie
Murphy, and the Burleson Jamboree
Stage Band.
The Burleson Jamboree is lo-
cated at 306 N.E. Wilshire in the old
Wilshire Village theater. This is a
live country stage show and is family
entertainment of the highest quality
with no alcohol, and smoking re-
stricted to the lobby only.
Showtime is every Saturday
night, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 for
adults, $5 for seniors 55 and older,
and $4 for children under 12.
Seating is reserved and reserva-
tions can be made by calling 295-
3512, however, tickets are always
available at the door.
Performer auditions are the first
Monday of each month from 6:30
p.m. until 10 p.m.

for six awards at Southern
Gospel Music Association

group, The Hensleys, were nomi-
nated in four different categories in
the Southern Gospel Music Associa-
tion Fan Awards. Since then, the
group has traveled around Texas

1991 award winning area artists
A mixed media painting by
Denton artist Kyle Farley has won
the $1,000 Fifth Avenue Foundation
Award, the top prize in the annual Art
in the Metroplex juried exhibition.
Farley won with "Untitled
(Brooklyn Riot)," a 4 foot by 8 foot
work.
The ninth annual Art in the Met-
roplex, sponsored by Texas Chris-
tian University and the Committee
for an Artists' Center, is on view
through Oct. 4 in TCU’s Exhibition
Hall, located on the north side of the
Moudy building at the comer of
University Drive and West Cantey.
Hours for the free showing are 11
a.m.-6p.m., Mondays; 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
Tuesdays-Fridays; and 1-6 p.m. on
Saturday and Sundays.
Second prize, the $500 Mr. and
Mrs. F. Howard Walsh Award, went
to Joe Guy of Fort Worth for "Isen-
heim (Stage Three)," also a mixed
media work.
"Drifting Focus," a mixed media
on vellum, earned the $400 Mr. and
Mrs. Robert M. Bass Award for Ann
Rosenwinkel of Weatherford, who
received her master of fine arts de-
gree from TCU in May.
The $300John L. Clardy Award
was presented to Ancrew Bennett of
Dallas for "New World Order," oil on
board, and the $200Robert E. Fiesler
Award went to Patrick Kelly of Fort
Worth for "Night and Fog," created
of wax, oil, wood, and fiberglass.
"Trojan Decoy," a sculpture by
Tracy Hicks of Dallas, received the
$100 Claud M. Vance Memorial
Award, and a new $100 prize was
presented by the Fort Worth Art
Dealers Association to Lynette Miller
of Dallas for a watercolor entitled,
"Lynette Miller Meditations #1.

nominations. "After all, it isn't the
name of the church Jesus will return
for, it is The Church," said Jerry
Hensley.
And now, the Hensleys were
nominated again, this time in six
categories including Group of the
Year, which they won. Jerry Hen-
sley was named Favorite Male Vo-
calist of the Year. The groups piano
player, Mona Brady had been nomi-
nated for Musician of the Year.
Sunday, Sept. 13-15, the Southern
Gospel Music Association's annual
convention was held at the Holiday
Inn South in Irving. Between 40 and
50 groups performed. Over800people
attened the festivities on Saturday
night.
The Hensleys are a non-denomi-
national group, and are available for
any church who would like them to
visit, either or regular services or
revivals.

Burleson Bible Church offers Awana children's program Sunday, Sept. 22
The Awana childrens' program
will begin at Burleson Bible Church
this Sunday at 5:50 p.m. Awana is
back for a second year, after a very
successful start last year.
Awana is an international non-
denominational Christian ministry.
It's purpose is to reach boys and girls
with the gospel of Christ and train
them to serve Him. All leaders com-

The Burleson Town and Country
Garden Club will meet at the
Community Center in Chisenhall
Park on Friday, Sept. 27, at 9:30
a.m.
The program will focus on
beautification of Hwy. 174 with
speaker Doug Evans, parks and
recreation director. The meeting is
hosted by Laurie Mae Mason with
co-hosts Ruby Robbins, Helen
Ayers, and Ruby Worn.

Zeitlin, who was in Fort Worth
to lecture at the Art in the Metroplex
opening reception Sept 8, selected
the 36 works in the exhibition from a
total of 204 pieces sulfttiitted by art-
ists in 12 North Texas counties.
Celebral Palsy support
group will meet Sept. 21
The Parent Support Group will
meet on Saturday, Sept. 21, from
9:30-11:30 a.m. at the United Cere-
bral Palsy administration offices at
1555 Merrimac Circle, Suite 102, in
Fort Worth. Discussion will involved
the medical aspectof Cerebral Palsy.
Child care will be provided. If

become involved with this planning

The program offered at Burle-
son Bible Church is for ages three
through grade six. The evening is
carefully organized and structured
for fun and learning. It involves 3U
minutes of team game time, 30 min-
utes of handbook time (Bible mem-
ory), and 30 minutes of counsel time.
The counsel time includes singing,
testimonies, awards, and a brief
message from the respective club's
leader.
Children who participate in
Awana agree that it is the highlightof
their week. Every child gains confi-
dence and self-esteem through the
award system and personal attention
of the many adult workers . Uniforms
and team competition give them a
sense of belonging and comradery.
They also grow in their appreciation
of God and country.
Preschool (ages3-4) are called
"Cubbies." Those in kindergarten,
first, and second grades are " Spark -
ies." Groups in third through sixth
grades are divided into boys (Pals
and Pioneers) and girls (Chums and
Guards) Jubs.
Registration will begin at 5:30
p.m. this Sunday at the church. A
handbook and uniform can be pur-
chased as they are earned. Children
should wear sneakers or soft shoes.

Evangelism Rally sponsored by
Southern Baptist held Sept. 22
An Area Evangelism Rally spon-
sored by local Southern Baptist
Churches will be held Sunday eve-
ning, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at the First
Baptist Church of Burleson, located
at the intersection of Ellison and
Johnson streets. Preaching will be
Steve Beckwith, pastor of the newest
church in Burleson, the Cedar Ridge
Baptist church. Beckwith is a Qi^le-
son native and a 1972 graduate of
Burleson High School. He received
his Master of Divinity Degree from
Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary in Fort Worth last May.
Other pastors will setVte on the pro-

at Stone Youth Outreach Center
"Destin ation Known," one of
the area's hottest con temporary bands,
will be in concert at the Stone Youth
Outreach Center Sept. 21, bringing
the message of Jesus Christ to youth
of all ages.
