Burleson Star Poll
._i
Do you want to know what your friends, neighbors, and co-workers think about major news topics? Well we want to know what Burlesonites think too, and
we want to share those thoughts with you. That's why the Burleson Star has started a "Burleson Star Poll" which we hope to publish every Thursday. We have
just enough people to start this new project up but we always welcome more. If you want to participate, fill out the form in this issue and mail it in, along with
a picture, or come by (319 N. Burlison Blvd.),fill out a form, and let us take your picture. This is your chance to tell us what you think!
QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Sixteen amendments win be on the constitutional amendment election ballot on Tuesday, Nov. 2. The amendments deal
with aiding minorities (via bonds) in starting new companies; encouraging compliance with environmental laws via tax exemption; clearing land titles
via the state relinquishing its claim; prohibiting a personal income tax without voter approval; allowing the legislature to detail the qualifications for
sheriff; abolishing the office of county surveyor in Jackson County; repealing some restrictions on the ability of corporations to raise capital; abolishing
the office of county surveyor in McLennan County; modifying the provisions for the redemption of property sold at a tax sale; authorizing bonds to
help the Veteran's Land Board purchase land for resale to veterans; making a provision so that tr ustrees of a local public penson system must adm mister
the system for the benefit of the system's participants and beneficiaries; allowing judges to deny bail to certain people who are already under the
supervision of a criminal justice agency when they are charged with violent or sexual offenses; adding TSTC and its campuses to a list of institutions
that receive funds from the Higher Education Assistance Fund; authorizing bonds for building or renovating corrections institutions or mental health
and retardation institutions; allowing the voters of Upshur County to call an election to decide whether the county surveyor's position should be
eliminated; and authorizing bonds to finance the Texas agricultural fund.
Of those 16, the Star has picked out four thafwere thought to be of the most interest. In every issue of the Burlseon Star from Oct. 21 to Nov. 1,
one amendment will be debated by the Burleson Star pollsters, who reviewed information from State Rep. Bernard Erickson that explained the pro
and cons of each amendment.
The third one to be debated is Proposition 12 which states—" The constitutional amendment permitting the denial of bail tocertain persons charged
with certain violent or sexual offenses committed while under the supervision of a criminal justice agency of the state or a political subdivision of the
state." Sen. Jane Nelson has come out for this constitutional proposition.

"Personally I don't believe that
anyonecharged with a sexual offense
of any kind should be permitted to
seethelightofdaymuchlessallowed
to go out and commit another. Mur-
der is a crime, no doubt, but some-
times therecan be mitigating circum-
stances such as fear for one's own life
or the protection of others. Each case
should be studied on its own facts.
I'm a firm believer in the Bill of
Rights but we can not put our chil-
dren and our adults in danger while a
possible sexual offender is out on
bail for months or years. Perhaps if
our courts were a little more-prepared
to hand out the maximum sentence,
there would be more deliberation
before action."
ELLEN ARMSTRONG
Owner, The Uniform Shop
"I think it would be a good thing.
It seems the laws now are made to
protect the criminals and not those
victims who have been criminally
assaulted."
CATHY FOSTER
Security guard/Tandy
"I'm in favor of Proposition 12.
After the most recent murder of a
little girl by a paroled sex offender, I
know for a fact that citizens want to
see more strict laws on individuals
who have committed serious crimes
of violence and who only serve a por-
tion of their sentence or who get out
on bail. This is not right. It's time we
give our children and ourselves some
peace of mind.”
CHESLEY SANDERS
Firefighter
"Absolutely. A majority of
crimes are commited by people who
have already been charged with other
crimesit's this hard core that we have
to get off the strete and keep off the
street"
STACY SINGLETON
Fire marshal
"It is my opinon that this amend-
ment needs a yes vote because I think
that if somebody commits an offense
while out on bail, that they need to be
locked up. We have too many people
out on bail continuing to commit
crimes."

dumping problems

Former businessowner
"I think this is an excellent thing.
I think we've seen too many examples
of the problems that can come from
the way our system is now. I think we
need more firm authority in that di-
rection."
GREG WALSTON
Peace officer
"We face a real dilemna in this
country concerning crime. We want
to protect the streets; we want to pro-
tect the citizenry; but at the same
time we still must protect an individ-
ual's rights. Unfortunately, I fear that
in our zeal to try to protect the general
citizenry, we could inadvertantly slip
into totalitarian type measures on the
pretense of protecting the citizenry.
The result would be the loss of freed-
dom for everyone."
GENE MIDDLETON
Raco Muffler and Brake
"Denial of bail to certain persons
charged with certain violent of sex-
ual offenses while under the supervi-
sion of a criminal justice agency of
the state—the key words are certain
and criminal justice. This suggests
that certain persons already convicted
of certain offenses and supervised by
a criminal justice agency are already
guilty of somthing criminal and
should not be considered for bail.
Let’s not worry so much about the
rights of certain persons and be more
concemd about the rights and safety
of the rest of us. Study the proposi-
tion and understand what you arc
voting for or against"

"Vote yes. It is time that the
American people sent a message to
the criminal elementthat we are more
concerned for the innocent victims of
their crimes than we are concerned if
the criminal is presumed innocent or
not. If a criminal is out on bail and
commits this kind of crime, then the
criminal gives up his rights. Let's
untie the hands of our judges, protect
the innocent people of our country,
and not worry so much about the
criminal.”

The volunteer staff at Harvest
House is struggling with an enormous
problem involving donations left after
hours and on weekends.
On the one hand, we cannot op-
erate withoutdonations from the com-
munity and the churches. On the other
hand, donations that arc left on our
doorstep over the weekend are being
looted and scattered everywhere.
What doesn't get stolen is being ru-
ined. Furniture left out in the rain
can't be used by anyone. Volunteers
are spending precious time cleaning
up an ever worsening mess every
Monday morning.
We are wracking our brains to
come up with a solution to this prob-
lem. We realize that working people
arc unable to drop Off donations dur-
ing business hours. We are consider-
ing opening a few hours for dona-
tions only on Saturdays and we are
trying to think of ways to have some-
one "on call" to come and open up at
other times. In the meantime, we have
posted NO DUMPING signs.
Please help us pass the word
about our dilemma, at the same time
understanding that we walk a fine
line. We don't want to alienate any-
one. Neither do we want to be an
eyesore or a convenient dump. We
welcome all suggestions.
