God gave us memory so that
we could have roses in Dec.
BY CRAIG VIRE
Paslor
Bethesda Baptist Church
James Barrie, English author and
dramatist, once said, "God gave us
memory so that-we could have roses
in December."
He meant, of course, that as long
as we have memory , we can enjoy
the beauty of the rose in seasons
when there are no blooms. Remem-
bering their delicate petals, their bril-
liant color, and their sweet fragrance
brings joy long after the blossoms
have faded.
Life is like that. Memory allows
us to enjoy experiences of love, joy,
and beauty in days when those things
seem to be absent.
During the Christmas season we
celebrate the birth of ourSavior, Jesus
Christ. Though we cannot be present
atthatblessedevent 2,000yearsago,
we remember God's greatest gift to
mankind and experience the joy and
hope he brings to all who believe.
"God gave us memory so that we
could have roses in December."
Jesus came to our world as the
"Rose of Sharon." He came to infuse
our lives with the sweet fragrance of
God's love. Amid the ugliness ot our
sin and guilt, the glory and beauty of
forgiveness and eternal life shine into
our world through the gift of a Savior.
In Romania, there is a valley
where roses are grown for the Vi-
enna market. If you visit that place
when the roses are blooming, wher-
ever you go the rest of the day, the
fragrance you carry with you betrays
where you have been.
Even so, the effect of our en-
counter with the Christ of Bethlehem
ought to linger as we begin a new
year. The presence of our Lord ought
to permeate all we do. People ought
to sense the unmistakable quality of
this life in us where ever we go.
Years ago, on the day after
Christmas, I passed a nativity scene
in front of a church. Mary, Joseph,
and all the other characters had been
removed. However, the doll which
had represented the baby Jesus was
still lying in the straw in the cold De-
cember twilight.
May the memory of the Savior
bom in Bethlehem fill our minds, lin-
ger in our hearts, and remain an abid-
ing presence throughout the new year
ahead.
Stidly I thought about how often
we rush into the new year. We leave
Jesus in the manger of Bethlehem
rather than carrying Him in our hearts
as an abiding Savior and a ruling
Lord. He leads us to experience life at
its best when we daily walk with
Him.
"God gave us memory so that we
could have roses in December.”
