Crowley, Sam Houston,
pushovers for Lady Elks
By GLENN COCHRAN
For the Lady Elks’ soccer team,
winning and losing are the same as
black and white. If the Lady Elks win
a game, they win big and if the Lady
Elks lose, they lose big. At least that
is the way it has been in three of the
Lady Elks recent games.
Results for Burleson's game with
Haltom last Friday were not avail-
able at the Burleson Star deadline, but
in the three games prior to that, the
Lady Elks won two at5-0and5-l and
lost one at 4-0.
Burleson defeated Crowley 5-1
in a game played at Elk Stadium on
Feb. 19.
In this contest, Burleson led 3-0
at the half and then sealed the victory
with two goals in the second half.
Kristen Cathey scored the Lady
Elks first goal with 10:38 remaining
on the clock. Laura McCann was
credited with the assist.
With six minutes remaining in
the half, Kim Norrid took an assist
from McCann and hit her target for a
Lady Elk 2-0 lead.
B urleson's last first half goal was
put in by McCann with four minutes
remaining in the period.
Crowley earned the first goal of
the second half/with 37 minutes
remaining o/lie clock. This put the
score at 3-1.
Ten minutes later, McCann put
in her secoptl goal of the night with
the assist going to Cathey.
For the Lady Elks' final goal of
the game, Tammie Sells took a pass
from Stephanie Lea and put it in. Her
shot was launched from approxi-
mately 30 yards out.
Overall, Burleson made 25 shots
on the Lady Eagles goal and in return,
Crowley made nine shots on goal.
Prior to the Crowley game, the
Lady Elks came up on the short end
afteraFeb.16gamewithMartin.The
final score in that game was 4-0.
Two of the Lady W arriors scores
came within minutes of each other.
The first was scored with two min-
utes remaining in the first half, and
thesecondfollowedshortly thereafter
for a half-time lead of 2-0.
"I thought we played an excel-
lent defensive game that first half,"
Burleson coach Pam Lea commented.
"Our offense made some shots on
goal, but their defense has given up
only five goals this season. They are
the best defensive team in the area. I
also think they are one of the fastest
defenses in the area too.”
In the second half, Martin went
on to score two additional scores, but
the Lady Elks were unable to score
on the strong Warrior defense.
In the Lady Elks' game with the
Sam Houston Lady Texans on Feb.
12, scoring was not a problem. Burle-
son won this match 5-0.
McCann opened up the scoring
with 18:10 remaining on the clock.
For the pay off, McCann took a pass
from Cathey and drove the ball home.
Two minutes later, Cassie Keller
made a throw-in from out of bounds
to McCann and she sent the ball flying
for a goal.
With 1:05 on the clock, Cathey
scored her first goal of the game after
taking a pass from McCann. This put
the half-t;me score at 3-0.
Five minutes into the second half,
McCann improved the Lady Elks'
lead to 4-0 when she took an assist
from Lea and scored.
The final Burleson score was
added with 24 minutes left in the
game. Capitalizing on a pass from
Norrid, McCann put in her fourth
goal of the night. This put the Lady
Elks up 5-0 and clinched the win.
Yellowjackets take Elks 4-2
Having previously beaten the
Stephenville Yellowjackets 2-1, the
Burleson Elks traveled to Stephen-
ville lastTuesday night with hopes of
another victory. Instead, Burleson
was met head on and the unyielding
Yellowjackets took the game at 4-2.
Play in the first40 minutes of the
game gave the hint of a closely
matched contest. At half-time, the
score was knotted at one point apiece.
The Yellowjackets scored first
in the half when a Stephenville player
scored on a penalty kick. The kick
was set up at the three minute mark
when an Elk defender was charged
with a hand ball inside of the penalty
area.

on offense and defense," said Burle-
son coach Steve Davis. "Our stingy
press produced numerous turnovers

then with 28 seconds remaining in
the game, Granbury came back and
took the lead," Davis explained. "With
