One of the servicemen's worst
enemies is boredom, and mail call is
one of the highlights of the day, ac-
cording to one of the men’s mother,
Mary Lou Dowd, mother of Richard
Osmon. As with anyone away from
home, it's hard to be away from home
during the holidays. Mitchells and
the Burleson Star recognize that fact,
and are determined that these men

A Burleson police officer suf-
fered contusions and a badly sprained
right ankle Saturday night after he re-
sponded to assist another officer who
was attempting to arrest a combati ve,
drunken man.
Officer Wolfram Ploof was
treated at Huguley Hospital after a
vjfelcnt struggle to help Officer Paul
Cprson arrest 28-year-old Charles
Ray Hayes of Alvarado on charges of
driving while intoxicated and resist-
ing arrest. When Hayes blood alco-
hol content was measured, over one-
and-one-half hours after the su uggle,
it was .15 percent. The legal limit is
.10.
According to Carson's report, he
was on patrol at 6:30 p.m. in the 9(X)
block of N.W. Burleson Blvd. on
Nov. 24 when he saw Hayes driving
a red primer 1972 Chevrolet Camaro
southwest bound in the 1000 block of
N.E. Alsbury.
Hayes was behind several cars at
the intersection of Alsbury and N.W.
Burleson Blvd. when the officer
watched him repeatedly accelerate
quickly , spin his tires, and slam the
brakes just before hitting the vehicle
in front of him, as vehicles pro-
ceeded through the intersection.
Carson pulled into the parking
lot of Scooter's Texaco at 898 N.E.
Alsbury to wail and see which way
Haycswasgoingiotum. Hayespullcd
into Scooters and parked. Carson
pulled in behind Hayes.
dH-THREE PEOPLE WERE in
the Camaro—Hayes (5-foot-8-
inchcs, 270pounds); a friend, Doaglas
Robert Sines, 37, of Cleburne; and
Hayes' brother. Clay Lawrence
Hayes, 26, also of Alvarado. The
younger Hayes and Sines went into
the store as Carson detained the older
Hayes by the vehicle. According to
Carson’s report, Hayes smelled
strongly of alcohol, was unsteady,
had slurred speech, was incoherent,
and had watery and bloodshot eyes.
Carson called for assistance and
Ploof responded.
Replanted
Christmas
tree will be
lit Monday
All right Burleson, what has to
do with Christmas and glows in the
night?
I'll give you a clue, it's not
Rudolph's nose. Still don’t know?
OK I'll tell you. It's the city of Burle-
son's Christmas tree.
And for those of you who are
still in the dark, each year Burleson
has an official Christmas tree that is
decorated in an assortment of colored
lights for all to see.
This year, as last year, the tree
will be located at the Burleson Police
Department, and it all goes as
planned will continue to be at that
same location for many years to
come.
This tree was donated by an in-
dividual out of Fort Worth and the
tree was dug up and replanted at the
police department by the Fort Worth
Parks and Recreation Forestry Divi-
sion. It is hoped that the tree will
survive the transplant andcontinue to
grow at its new location.
The official Christmas tree
lighting is set for Monday, Dec. 3,
and Mayor Vera Calvin w ill do the
honors at 6 p.m.
Immediately following the
lighting ceremony, Santa Claus will
visit the Burleson Fire Hall located
on the comer of Bransom and Eldred
streets.
Pictures will be taken with Santa
beside a fire truck and will be avail-
able for a $3 donation.
Also on site will be the Norwood
Elementary School choir, singing
popular Christmas jingles.
Socome on out and enjoy the fun
Monday night. Refreshments will be
available and smiles will be aplenty.
Carson tried to conduct field
sobriety tests to detect intoxication,
but according to the report, Hayes
would not follow instructions. Car-
son handcuffed Hayes' left hand
behind his back but when he attempted
to cuff Hayes right arm, Hayes re-
sisted. When Hayesconunued to resist
arrest, Carson told him that he would
have to use the stun gun if Hayes did
not cooperate.
(The stun gun does not physi-
cally injure the suspect and is one
option in an escalating physical con-
frontation with a suspect. A mild
electric current is used to stun or
incapacitate a violent suspect.)
When Hayes continued to resist,
Carson stunned Hayes for the first of
three times.
Hayes was told again to cooper-
ate in the handcuffing, but according
to the report, Hayes shoved himself
off the patrol unit he was standing up
against. Carson stunned him again,
with no apparent effect. Hayes pulled
his cuffed arm free and broke loose.
This started an approximately four
minute-long struggle among Hayes,
Carson, and Ploof.
Ploof grabbed Hayes from be-
hind and Carson grabbed him from
the front in an aiiempl to re-cuff the
suspect. Hayes pushed Carson olf
and began swinging punches at him
as Ploof was still hanging on to Hayes
back. Carson punched back, hitting
Hayes in the face.
HAYES SWUNG Ploof, who
was still hanging on to his back, into
a police car. The three wrestled to the
ground where Haves fell on top of
Ploof s right leg.
Ploof told Carson he thought his
ankle was broken so Carson again
attempted to use his stun gun to calm
Hayes. Carson s stun gun was broken
in the fight so he got Ploofs and
stunned Hayes for a third time. As
Carson was attempting to stun Hayes,
Hayes started to get up. wuh both
officers still hanging on.
Due to Ploof s injury and the fact
that thev were about to lose control ol
Hayes again. Carson stood up and
kicked Hayes in the stomach three
times before Hayes went back down
on the ground.
Several onlookers from the store
and adjacent businesses gathered to
watch the struggle. No one called
911. Fellow officers did not know of
the struggle until the police dispatcher
tried to relay information about the
suspect to Carson, and Carson sent
out a garbled cal I for help. Hayes'two
passengers came out of Scooter's
before backup of ficers wea called to
the scene. Ploof, whow as still pinned

Hello, this is Santa Claus...
‘ Parents, db you ever wahtlo tfH toot children something but !*«
that If you tell them it will just go in one ear and out the other? If so, the
Burleson Parks and Recreation Department has the thing for you. It’s
called the "North Pole Calling" and to be more specific it's Santa Claus
making the calls. Between the times of 5-8 p.m. on Dec 10-13, Santa ( laus
will be making several hundred calls in the area and if you so wish, he will
mention to your child that he or she should study more or even quit
picking on a smaller child in the family. After all, who is your child going
to listen to more than Santa Claus? You know the saying." When Santa
Claus talks, kids listen (or something like that)."
If you are interested in Santa calling your child, just fill out the form
that was sent home with each child (K- 2nd grade) from school and return
it. If you didn't receive a copy of the form, contact the schools or the
Burleson Community Center.'On the form, mention specific gifts your
children want for for Christmas and if you want, mention something you
would like Santa to say to your child, whether it be to straighten up his
or her act or simply to congratulate the child on his or her good behavior
throughout the year. Either way, coming from Santa, it's sure to get
through to your child! _
