We have had a very hot
dry week out our way. We
could sure use some nice
rain right now. I guess
we will have to just wait
until God gets ready to
send us another good one.
Things are sure
changing around here. We
have lost another good
friend and neighbor. Mr.
Haskell Knight passed
away at Hopkins County
Memorial Hospital in
Sulphur Springs Sunday
afternoon. They have been
our neighbors for a good
long time. We loved and
appreciated them. We have
lost so many good friends
in the last two years, a
good neighbor on every
side of us. Mr. Bunch
Dougherty on the south,
Haskell on the west, Mrs.
Lucinda Mitchell on the
east, and Mr. Cecil Bruce
and Mr. Stanley Adams on
the north. Cecil passed
away several years ago,
we still miss him. And
also Stanley Adams, Mrs.
Gloria Asbill, Mrs.
Cordie Lennon, W. C.
Asbill and Winnie Potts.
We miss all of them, and
another real good friend,
Mrs. Edna Spinks.
Leon and Thrace Asbill
seem to be doing okay.
They made a trip to
Houston this week to see
Thrace's sister. She has
been in the hospital.
Our nice new neighbor,
Mr. Dollar, brought us
some real good cantelopes
one day this week. We are
proud of all of nice new
neighbors.
They are still working
on the new church
building project. They
may get started on the
framing in 3 or 4 weeks.
I went to the doctor
and didn't get a good
report. I need your
prayers. I have to go
back to the doctor the
3rd of August.
Mrs. Parkman got to
come home
from
the
hospital
Friday.
She's
still not feeling
too
well. We
are sure
sorry
to hear
she's still not
feeling
well. We
are
thinking
of you
and
praying
help you.
that God
will
Mary
Bishop,
Hilda
Ellison and Shannon, went
to Houston this week to
spend a few days with
Homer and family.
Mrs. Katie Bruce has
not been feeling well
this week. She has had a
real bad cold.
We were sorry to hear
of Mrs. Oneta Nix passing
away. Her family has our
sympathy. She was one of
the first ones I ever
knew in Emory, she and
Mrs. Luellis Hood and
Mrs. Ethel Alexander.
I didn't feel like
attending church this
morning. Mary Ola said
that the four little
girls, Amanda, Lisa,
Meredith and Shantil,
sang some real pretty
songs.
We were glad to have
Bro. Arvie Asbill stop by
and visit with us for a
few minutes Wednesday
afternoon on his way to
prayer meeting.
I called the Green
Acres Nursing Home and
asked how Mrs. Exa Adams,
Mrs. Fenter and_ Mrs.
Irene Flether were 'doing.
The report was that they
were all doing fine.
Mrs. Katie Bruce and
her son, Brady, and wife,
and Mrs. Martha Lyle, of
Garland, and Melissa
Lyle, of College Station,
made a trip to Canton
Saturday morning. Katie
said that there were a
lot of people there, and
it sure was HOT! Joe Ray
and M. J. made a trip to
Dallas Saturday.
Mrs. Dougherty is
expecting her son Vernon,
and family, of
Gladewater, home tomor-
row. Vernone’s oldest
daughter is attending
college in Kentucky, she
will be coming also.
Miss Jeffrey Vaught's
neice, Betty, was
visiting her Saturday.
We heard that Mrs.
Elodie Stubb's son was
real sick again. He lives
in another state. I sure
hope that he gets better
soon.
Mary, Hilda and Shantii
came home from Houston
Saturday. Meredith came
home with them. She will
be spending the week with
them and attending the
Cheer Leading School with
Hilda and Shantil this
week. I hope you girls
have a lot of fun.
We were real happy to
have Ray and Peggy Long
visit us Sunday. Peggy
seems» to be feeling
better. They visited
Ray's mother, Mrs. Leta
Long, of the Bonanza
Community.
We enjoyed Hubert,
Oleta and Kyle visiting
with us Sunday afternoon.
Kevin started to bring
them down, they had car
trouble. Hubert went back
and got his car and came
on down. They also
visited Oleta's mom and
dad, Mr. and Mrs. Cleon
Spradling.
We enjoyed Mary Ola's
visit Sunday afternoon.
All of Mrs. Dougherty's
boys visited her this
weekend, Vernon and
family, of Longview, Gary
and family, of S.
Carolina* Phillip and
family, of Georgia, Joe
Ray and wife, M. J., and
Leon, of Dallas.
Rejoice with them that
rejoice, and weep with
them that weep. Romans
12:15.
For it is written, as I
live, saith the Lord,
every knee shall bow to
Me and every tongue shall
confess to God. Romans
14:11.
So then every one of us
shall give account of
himself to God. Romans
14:12.
Pray for the sick and
lonely. You could be the
next one in need of
prayer.
By Winifred Jones
Thank the Lord for the
good sunshine, it sure
does make the grass grow.
Everyone might have
plenty of hay yet.
Freedom Church of God
had real good services
over the weekend. Bro.
Kratzmeyer preached two
good messages, and they
sang a real pretty song.
The Owens and and
Charles Brumit sang
pretty songs.
We real glad to have
Gail Armstrong and little
Kenney with us Sunday,
from Point, and we invite
them back any time.
Mary Lamineck was able
to be back in church, but
didn't feel very good.
She has something like
the flu, a lot of people
are having it. Aunt Kate
has it. I think that she
was going to the doctor
today.
We went to Olney
Wednesday, and then on up
to Wichita Falls
Thursday, to see George's
sister, who is in the
rest home there. She is
doing fine, just can't
walk. So pray for the
sick ones.
Albert Fischer and Lois
Brimer got married
Saturday at the church.
It was a pretty wedding,
and a lot of people
there. I sure hope they
have a long happy life
together.
George and I went to
visit Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Griffith one day last
week.
Lonnie Hammons and his
children came by Saturday
and did some fishing.
They didn't have any
luck, but got some
blackberries.
Leta Lumpkin came by
for a little while.
Karen is moving to
Sulphur Springs.
Marcie Kirby has
another little girl and
John and Janet t Hash has
another little girl.
Bro. and Sis. Hash came
in about 10:30 last
night. They are on their
way to the General
Assembly at Ft. Worth.
Bro. and Sis. Dickey
are coming by tomorrow
and leave their two boys
with us.
We visited Grover and
Dorothy Friday, and he is
still improving all the
time. So just keep on
praying for them.
The church gave the A.
K. Millers a plack Sunday
morning, and then a party
after church, for being
in the church so long,
and they are also the
oldest members now.
Barbara Scott Lim came
by for a while Saturday.

Cooler Unfolds
2nd Annual Quill
Show
Bursting through with every
color of the rainbow, the se-
cond annual Bright Star Pat-
ches Quilt Show is set to kick
off at the Hopkins County
Civic Center in Sulphur
Springs Aug. 20.
The two-day extravaganza
of handmade items is expected
to be bigger than last year’s,
according to center General
Manager Rod Henderson.
“Last year was beyond our
greatest expectations,”
Henderson said. “We had
hoped for 50 quilts. Instead
when we started registering the
participants, it seemed there
was an endless line.”
With 188 entries in the 1987
show, the event surpassed
other area shows by a com-
manding margin. “What made
ours different was that they
were all quilts,” he said, ad-
ding that officials in Tyler,
Longview and surrounding
cities said they had more pieces
entered, but “nowhere near
that many quilts."
Entries in the five categories
should be taken to the Civic
Center August 18 between 8
a.m. and 5 p.m. or Friday,
August 19 between 8 a.m. and
noon. Entry fee is $2 per item
in the following categories:
Best Appliqued, Best Pieced
(original and traditional), Best
Small Piece, Other Techni-
ques, and Group-Team
Quilted. In addition, viewers
choice awards will be given in
an overall category and antique
category.
Judging will be finished Fri-
day afternoon with entrants on-
ly invited to a special reception
with the judge beginning at 6
p.m.
Saturday, August 20,
features viewing from 10 a.m.
to 7 p.m., and Sunday, Aug.
21, hours are from noon to 5
p.m. Admission is $2 for
adults, and children under 12
free.
