Far Rasy Workers
A cooperative drive of the
Office of Defense Transporta-
tion, War Manpower Commis-
sion and Railroad Retirement
Board to obtain vitally needed
workers for railroads is result-
ing in placing a considerable
number of men in johe as they
leave the armed services. Se-
lective Service officials are co-
operating in putting veterar -
in touch with RRB officials
who are stressing the recruit-
ment campaign.
Frank E. Fleener, Dallas, re-
gional director of the RRB.
announced today that, 17 re-
turning veterans were placed
by the board's Shreveport of-
fice the past month.
The Selective Service Re-
employment Committee at.
Beaumont, Texas, furnished
representatives of the RRB a
list of 15 discharged veterans.
Five of them, on being con-
tacted, expressed interest in
railroad work.
A discharged WAC was re-
ferred by the board’s New Or-
leans office to the Railway Ex-
press Agency where she was
employed as a\chauffeur.
. At San Antonio a represen-
tative of the board is at the
induction center at Dodd Field
every Saturday—the day
chosen by the Army to release
inductees physically unfit for
military service—to interview
the men about accepting rail-
road jobs.
These and many other efforts
to recruit railroad workers are
parts of a nationwide pro-
gram to obtain at least 100,-
000 additional workers for
that part of the transportation
industry to keep materials and
persons .moving in trains in
connection with winning the
war.
Many other groups are par-
ticipating in that drive. The
RRB has employment offices in
all of the principal cities in
this part of the country. In-
formation may be obtained
from its regional office at 424
U. S. Terminal Annex Build-
ing, Dallas). ■
Can Tomatoes Is
Cappleman’s Urge
Dallas, Tex. (UP)—Predict-
ing a huge crop of Texas to-
matoes, L. J. Cappleman, di-
rector of the War Food Ad-
ministration’s distribution of-
fice,-today urged Texas house-
wives to put up as many cans
of tomatoes as possible this
summer.
Cappleman estimated a 72
per cent increase in the Rio
Grande Valley crop of 3,927,-
000 bushels and said that
while no figures'were avail-
able on the probable East Tex-
as acreage, it was understood
it, too, had been upped consid-
erably.
. Another tomato price sup-
port program was foreseen by
the WFA director in case the
market becomes glutted.
