Enjoying her employment
with the county of Rains, Mrs.
Vadean Childers works as the
district and county deputy for
Mrs. Mary Sheppard, Emory’s
County Clerk. Spending the
last ten-years working in the
courthouse, the first four of
those years Vadean worked for
the county agent, and the last
six have been in the clerk’s of-
fice, where she says it’s real
interesting to work around all
the old records, and enjoys the
people she works with each
day.
Vadean is the daughter of
Otto and Alma Ely of Emory,
and says that her mother taught
all of her children to cook, in-
cluding Vadean’s two bro-
thers-she thought it was just as
important that a man knew how
to take care of himself as a
woman did. Vadean really en-
joys cooking, she says, and
especially recipes that include
chicken since sne likes to ‘eat
healthy,’ and loves a good fish
fry when her friend Jim catches
those big channel catfish found
in Lake Tawakoni.
Vadean is the mother of two
daughters, Mrs. Pamela Jacks
of Emory, and Mrs. Penny
Roberts of Rowlett, and has
four grandchildren. And of
course her favorite pasttime is
playing with those little grand-
babies every chance she gets!
Being a member of the Shady
Grove Baptist Church since the
age of twelve, Vadean was
really proud when the church
re-opened not too long ago,
and can be there once again to
worship.
She’s included her favorite
‘chicken’ recipes, and Jim’s
favorite dessert, Lazy Cobbler.

Fox Family
Reunion
Descendants of the late Mr.
and Mrs. W.L. Fox, pioneer
residents of Hunt County, met
at the Rose Community Center
in Emory, Sunday, June 10th
for their annual reunion and the
celebration this year of Tom
Waters 79th birthday, son-in-
law of the late W.L. Fox’s.
For the last three years we
have welcomed some of the
W.L. Fox’s sister’s family,
Julia Fox Smith, who were also
pioneer residents of Hunt
County. We welcome them
and hope to have more each
year.
After holding hands and
forming a ring the invocation
was given by Geraldyne Smith
Johnson’s husband. Bill, of
Greenville. A bountiful meal
was enjoyed by all.
Martha Fox of Longview,
niece of Rowena Fox Waters,
had charge of the program. She
displayed on a large poster in
the center, an 8x10 picture of
the W.L. Fox family and
smaller individual pictures of
each member around them in
adult years.
Small pictures of family
members through the 5th
generation were run off on
paper and passed around to
identify, all but one or two as
babies or little children. We
had fun giving each the correct
name.
Each family present was
asked to give an update on
events of the past year on their
families.
We were down in number
this year due to conflicting
events.
After lots of visiting, piano
playing and singing we called
it a day.
The following people attend-
ed, Gladys Fox and Martha,
Longview; Bob and Beverly
Lambert, Euless, Tx.; Tom
and Rowena Waters, Emory,

Toyce Phillips along with Win-
cie and friend, Cooper, Tx.;

quite, Tx.; W.L. and Marie

MOSQUITOS
Mosquitoes can be pests in
the outdoor living area. To
help control, treat the areas
where they rest during the day.
Popular spots include under the
eaves, in and under shrubs - in
fact, any place they get shade
and protection from the wind.
Also eliminate breeding areas
such as stagnant water in clog-
ged roof gutters, tin cans or
other objects that can hold
water after a rain. An
unscreened rain barrel is
another excellent breeding
spot.
PESTS
♦Insects to watch for at this
time on landscape plants in-
clude spider mites on most
everything, lacebugs on
pyracantha and sycamore,
bag worms primarily on
junipers and other narrow leaf-
ed evergreens but can be on
most anything, and stink bugs
on fruits and vegetables.
Loopers and caterpillars can be
controlled with one of the
forms of bacillus thurengien-
sis.
♦It is time for chinch bugs in
St. Augustine lawns. At the
last reading, Dursban and
Diazinon are still cleared for
chinch bug control. Follow
label precautions and instruc-
tions. Granular forms are
probably easiest to apply and
most effective for the
homeowner to use.
♦This is open season on
aphids. They usually attack the
young tender foliage. Just a
few aphids per plant can usual-
ly be controlled by natural
predators. However, if condi-
tions are right, the population
build-up can be rapid. When
this happens they can usually
be brought under control with
Orthene, Diazinon or
Malathion. Never exceed .
dosages provided on the label.
♦Continue preventive spray .
program on roses for blackspot
and mildew control. Benlate or ;
Funginex will control both. ,
Remember, unless you keep .
healthy leaves on your rose '
bushes they won’t have the ,
energy to bloom and grow.
♦If poor drainage has ruined ,
your spring garden, consider
building a raised bed for
flowers and/or vegetables. By
starting now, you will have it
ready for planting the fall
garden in late August and early •.
September.
♦White flies can be
detrimental to your gardenia
plants. Spray with Orthene to
control. Follow label direc-
tions.
