A NOTE FROM ferry Scott
Bert ling, editor of The Hunts-
ville Ifem, saying her parents,
Lois & Bobby Scott, who live
in Emory, really enjoy readirfgw
the Rains County Leader...
and she is asking for a plug for
help, which we will share with
you here... "The residents of
Huntsville and Walker County-
want to invite your readers to
help in a project to save the
Sam Houston Memorial Muse-
um and Park Complex in
Huntsville, which could be
closed without a successful
fund-raising effort this year.
First, we invite you to join us in
Huntsville Friday, Apirl 22,
thru Sunday, April 24, for the
East Texas Folk Festival,
which will be held for the first
time on Sam Houston State
University property .adjacent to
the park and mustum. This
event is Walker county's way of
pulling ourselves up by our
own bootstraps' in these tough.
times. We can’t stand the
thought of our museum being
closed. So we’re throwing a
three day party to celebrate
our heritage, and including a
lot of the folk arts, crafts and
traditions that made our state
what it is. You're all invited.
Second, we invite you to enlist
in the New Army of the Repub-
lic of Texas. For a donation of
$25 or more, you can become a
charter member of the organi-
zation that promises to fight for
Gen. Sam Houston’s honor.
All the money from the recruit-
ment drive will help the effort
to keep the museum open. You
can sign up now by mailing a
check to the New Army, 1515
Ave. Q, Huntsville, TX 77340
or you can sign up at the
festival. Men, women and chil-
dren are welcome "...
DID YOU HEAR THAT big
fish story that happened here
right on the enclosed public
square? As we hear it, we
didn’t see them or get a pic-
ture, since no one called any
member of the press... some
fish, some dead, some stiff gig-
gling, were dumped .thrown hr
‘ somehow handled on the
square after Tuesday’s primary
votes were counted and after
anxious candidates and anx-
ious citizens had gone home to
relax./., it is reported that
about 1:30 a.m. an elected
county official took note of the
dumped fish... and in the mor-
ning of Wednesday around
6:30 or 7:00, the County Judge
called the word to the Rains
County Commissioners to de-
clare fish had been dumped,
strewn or handled on the pub-
lic square, which is governed
by the Rains County Commis-
sioners ' Court... the fish were
scooped up, picked up or we ’ll
say ' 'removed ’ ’ by the employ-
ees of the commissioners...
and if you were not here early,
you missed it... and we hear
Phil Harris is offering a $50
reward to know who dumped
the fish!... is anybody listen-
ing?...

Re-Count
Breaks Tie
In last Tuesday’s Demo-
cratic run-off election, 1793
Rains County voters turned out
to cast their vote in three hotly-
contested races for sheriff,
constable of precincts 2 & 3,
and commissioner of precinct
t.
In the sheriff’s race, Richard
Wilson defeated Sammy Potts
by a vote of 1048 to 734,
garnering about 59% of the
votes, while Phil T. Harris
defeated W. R. •‘Dub’’ Wea-
therford by a vote of 491 to
340, also receiving 59% of the
'Votes cast. -A.
And once again the impor-
tance of just one vote was evi-
dent when the race for com-
missioner of precinct I was
tied with 282 votes cast for
both Jimmy Roberts and
Wayne Luckett. When a vote
re-count was held Friday
morning. Democratic party
Chairman Cay Wingfield an-
nounced Roberts was the win-
ner with 283 to Luckett’s 281
It was unusual to have
another tie so soon, since the
sheriff’s run-off candidates
were decided in a drawing. In
the March 8th primary only
two votes separated sheriff’s
candidates Sammy Potts and
Mike Carter, who bofh fin-
ished behind -Democrat
Richard Wilson and in front of
incumbent Andrew Roberts.
When one of the candidates
requested a recount, the two
finished in a tie. Potts won the
drawing, which was held by
placing two identical slips of
paper in a hat, one them said
“candidate” on it, the other
one was blank.
If the run-off recount had
come out still a tie, this method
woflld have been used again to
determine who would be the
next commission of precinct 1,
Voters should never under-
estimate the importance of a
few votes, since several hotly
contested races in recent years
have been won by a very nar-
row margin. In 1984 in a run-
off for sheriff between Andrew
Roberts and Richard Wilson,
Roberts won by only 9 votes.
And in 1982 B. D. Chism won
the office of county judge on a
write-in ticket in November by
only 14 votes over A. L.
Busby.
The other office on this
year’s run-off ballot was for
member, State Board of Edu-
cation, District 9, which A. M.
“Bob” Aikin received 1070 to
James W. “Jim” Wiley’s 358.
The Rains County Republi-
cans also held a run-off for
__severaL-stale-offices, as fol-
lows: United States Senator:
Beau Boulter 6, Wes Gilbreath
9. For Railroad Commis-
sioner: P. S. “Sam" Ervin 7,
Ed Emmett 8. For Justice of
the Supreme Court, Place 2:
Nathan Hecht 9, Ronald S.
Block 6.
The complete Democratic
voting results by boxes is also
being carried in this week’s

Farmers have until May 2,
1988, to report their 1988
planting of wheal and oats. Ac-

would include producers parti-

base farms with zero acres
planted, or farms having small

Great Texas
Trash Off
The Great Texas Trash Off
will be Saturday, April 23.
People who care will be par-
ticipating all over the State of
Texas. Our roadsides arc beau-
tiful now with wildflowers, but
underneath this beauty is the
ugly trash that careless people
pitch out.
It would be great if the City
of Emory would have a “Great
Trash Off." The clean-up
campaigns have been success-
ful in the past because a few
people cared enough to par-
ticipate. The majority leaves
the cleaning to a very few.
The Rains Garden Club is
ready to take the lead if enough
people are interested in clean-
ing up the streets and roads in
the city limits. If you arc in-
terested in helping, contact
some of the civic leaders, and
if enough interest is shown, a
clean-up week will be planned.

Dumped
On Square
No one know how they got
here or what message was in-
tended by their presence, but
someone went to a lot of'trou-
ble when they unloaded ap-
proximately 80 fish, mostly
carp and drum, around the
Courthouse square Monday
morning.
Sometime in the wee hours
of the morning, the
culprit/culprits took the fish
and neatly placed them in park-
ing stalls that completely circle
the courthouse.
County Judge B.D. Chism
was notified about the fish at
approximately 7:30 a.m. by
Mary Sheppard, Coun-
ty/District Clerk, who
discovered the fish when she
arrived at work. He in turn
called County Commissioners,
Ralph Middleton and Roy Don
Shipp, who sent some of their
crewmen to aid in the cleanup.
The fish, many still alive, were
shoveled into dump trucks and
hauled to Commissioner Mid-
dleton’s pasture, where they
were buried.

Rains County
Drug trial
Perks %Ip
The Rains County drug trial
entered the 14th week Monday
in the 8th Judicial District
Court with the Hon. Lanny
Ramsay presiding.
A surprise witness flown in
from California last week caus-
ed real excitement and interest,
which State Prosecutors Dan
Haygood and Kevin Chapman
brought in.
The trial, the longest of any
kind held in Rains County, has
been through State’s testi-
mony, defense testimony, and
jury delays, is now in rebuttal
testimony by the state.
The co-defendants, Christy
Lynn Lewis, 27, Tommy
Charles Haynes, 43, Tametha
Lynn Tarrent, 20, and Billy
W. Stokes, 21, are on trial
before 8th District Judge Lan-
ny Ramsay charged with pos-
session of controlled substance
with intent to distribute.
And most interesting was the
California witness identifying
two of the defendants, Haynes
and Miss Lewis, as making a
purchase of a large quantity of
chemicals and laboratory
equipment in 1985 and 1986.
Following state rebuttal will
be final arguments before the
case goes to the jury.
The four co-defendants,
with Donald Leroy Wolfe,
who is deceased, were indicted
in Hopkins County but had to
be re-indicted in Rains County,
where the five were arrested on
a search by Dept of Public
Safety narcotics officers,
Hopkins County Sheriff’s
Dept, officers. Highway Patrol
Officers on June 17, 1987, fn
the Bonanza Community. 7
They were not assisted by
any Rains County Shciiffs
Dept, dfficers.
* Thus the dope trial went into
its 65th day Monday, April
18th.
