Weekly Ag
Update
should control submerged
aquatic vegetation before mid-
June. says Dr Joe Lock,
fisheries specialist for the
Texas Agricultural Extension
Service Waiting until summer
to treat could ^ause serious ox
vgen depletion
Losk recommends first iden-
tity ing the plants and then us-
ing the herbicide effective for
that plant Use spot treatments
at weekly intervals instead ot
treating a large area to prevent
■vygen depletion Emergent
and shoreline plants are more
effectively treated later in the
year
It aquatis weeds are not a
problem or have been controll-
ed. pond fertilization can still
be started Begin with one
gallon of a liquid fertilizer for-
mulation per surface acre or
lixi pounds of a high nitrogen
and phosphorus granular ter
tihzer placed in shallow water
Repeat at 30 perednt ot the in
irtai amount as needed to main
tain a light green bloom in the
[> >nd
Lock says this is the time for
shvking bass and forage fish
Bass are m relatively short sup-
ply this year because of the
freeze in early April disrupting
spawning There is also still
time to stovk catfish it needed
