7th Graders
Defeat Winnsboro
Second in
Alba Tourney
This past week has been a
very productive week for the
7th grade Wildcat basketball
team. Last Monday night, Jan.
16th, the 'Cats traveled to
Winnsboro to face the district
leaders. The 'Cats, trying to
avenge an early loss to the Red
Raiders, dethroned the king-
pins in a dramatic overtime
victory, 28-26. The tough
double-team play of Danny
Miller, Ryan Melton, Matthew
Prather and Gabriel Kennimer
kept the Winnsboro 6’ 1” post-
man off the boards. The
Winnsboro center led his team
with 16 points in the last
meeting between the two
teams. After intermission the
host led the Wildcats 14-12.
The game stayed close
throughout the second half, un-
til the 'Cats fell behind by five
points with only three minutes
left in regulation. The 'Cats
then clawed their way back in-
to the contest by displaying a
tough half court press. Guards
Jason Campbell and Joey
Chastain did the most damage.
Then Danny Miller hit two key
free throws to tie the game at
26. This is the way regulation
play ended.
After a slow start in over-
time, Ryan Melton sank a turn-
around baseline jumper to ice
the game for the visiting 'Cats
28-26.
Overall, the ’Cats were led
in scoring by Campbell who
bombed 12 points, Melton and
Miller added 6 points, while
Chastain chipped in 4 points.
The victory left the ’Cats
one game out of first place.
With a victory over Quitman
next week, they can share a
part in the title.
The 'Cats traveled to Alba
this last weekend to compete in
the Alba 7th g.ade tournament.
The 7th grade entered two
teams. Thursday night the 7th
grade ‘B’ team played Alba’s
‘A’ team. The shorter Rains
team scrapped and fought, but
were defeated by a 34-14
score.
Chris Forbis led the ‘B’
cagers with 6 points, Michael
Arnold added 4 points, with
Randy Wallace and Chad
Dickey chipping in 2 points.
Jeremy Nino, Ryan Brown and
Phillip Smith played good de-
fense.
The tournament then moved
to Saturday where the Rains
7th grade ‘A’ team took on
Quinlan. The 'Cats used the
I*
fast break and a tough defense
to dominate the Panthers by a
43-17 score. Leading the ’Cats
in scoring was Ds-nny Miller,
18 points; Jason Campbell, 10
points; Joey Chastain and Ryan
Melton, 7 points; and Kyle
Rivers, 1 point.
Later on Saturday the 7th
grade ‘B’ team played the
Winnsboro ‘A’ team. The B'
team fought the taller, swarm-
ing Red Raiders to a 9-7 deficit
at the end of the first period,
but were defeated 44-18. The
young ’Cats were led in scor-
ing by Michael Arnold’s 5
points, Chris Forbis and
Jeremy Nino contributed 4
points, while Chad Dickey and
Phillip Smith chipped in 2
points. Ryan Brown played
good defense and moved well
on offense.
By defeating Quinlan 43-15
the Rains ‘A’ team played in
the championship game late
Saturday night. Their oppon-
ent, Mabank, earned the right
by defeating Alba 54-18 and a
good Winnsboro team 48-25.
A tough Mabank team featured
a full court man-to-man along
with two 5'10" players inside.
The shorter, quicker Rains
team blitzed the man-to-man to
take an early 12-5 lead, but
Mabank came back to close
within one at halftime, 18-17.
After intermission the 'Cats
forced Mabank into a zone de-
fense. This move hurt the ’Cat
offense. By the end of the 3rd
period Mabank led 31-27. The
4th period opened with post
man Gabriel Kennimer fouling
out. The Rains scoreboard only
listed 3 fouls but the official
book said 5 fouls. Kennimer
was doing an excellent job of
rebounding and blocking out.
With Rains having to go to a
four-guard offense, the taller
Mabank team prevailed and
won 40-28.
Leading the ’Cats in a great
effort and a nice 2nd place
trophy was Danny Miller with
13 points, Campbell 6 points,
Melton 5 points, and Chastain
4 points. Matthew Prather and
Kyle Rivers did a good job off
the bench on defense.
The ’Cats did an excellent
job in the final but came up a
little short. The 'Cats upped
their record to 6-3. The 'Cats
next game will be played here
against Quitman on the 30th
for a share of the district title.
