The bass fishing is still pretty good, and as in the
last few reports - jigs and spoons are the luies to
use. If you are going to try your luck this time of
the year, remember - go slow1 The crappie are very
good in deep water around the dam, and are being
caught on minnows. Catfishing is good on shrimp and
minnows and goldfish.

Fishing has started to pick up, lots of bass have been
caught the last few days. Lots of slot blass, and 9
that have been weighed in at 7 3/4 and 12 lbs. They've
been mostly in deep water, and being caught on jig 4
pig or jig 4 craw worm. Crappie is good in deep water
and under bridges on minnows, not many on jigs.
Catfish are good on trot lines with live bait and
shrimp, and on rod 4 reels with blood bait, shrimp 4
night crawlers. I don't have anything on bream.

Lake Fork
Angler Expects Big

January is just about over
and it won't be long before
those big ol ’ bass on Lake Fork
and other area lakes begin to
think about looking for spawn-
ing sites. Nesting activity on
Fork is expected as early as the
next 30 days during the full
moon. Some bass have begun
their spawn already on power
plant lakes such as Welsh and
Monticello.

Return Of Coastal
Striped Bass
Holds Promise
SEABROOK - At one point
in history, mighty striped bass
swamupJCexas- r-tvefs-to-xpawn-
each spring, then returned to
the briny Gulf of Mexico.
Their disappearance from
those same waters went vir-
tually unnoticed during the ear-
ly 1900s, possibly because of
the abundance of »ther fishes
in the state’s river and bays.
Now Texas Parks and Wild-
life Department fishery biolo-
gists are working to restore
sea-run populations of stripers
for the state’s anglers to enjoy.
“We can only guess what
caused the stripers to disap-
pear,” said Dr. Jerry Clark,
coastal fisheries branch chief,
“but a similar decline happen
ed in other Gulf states and
along the Atlantic coast.”
Biologist Henry Maddux
said water quality problems
and overfishing that might
have been a factor in striped
bass’ problems earlier this cen-
tury have been corrected in
many river systems, opening
the door for possible re-
establishment of vigorous
populations of the hard-
fighting fish.
Stripers are anadromous,
meaning they normally live in
saltwater bays or the ocean but
swim up freshwater rivers to
spawn. This may already have
happened in the Trinity River
below Lake Livingston, Mad-
dux said. “During sampling at
several points below the lake
last spring we collected 127
striped bass eggs and two lar-
vae (newly-hatched fish),” he
said.
The department has stocked
stripers mainly in (he San An-
tonio and ‘Galveston Bay
systems. A recent study by the
Gulf States Marine Fisheries
restoration of striped bass are
ideal. In fact, Madux said, the
study listed the Brazos, Col-
orado, Guadalupe, Navasota,
Neches, Nueces, Sabine, San
Antonio and Trinity Rivers all
as high priority areas for re-
introduction of the fish.
Maddux noted that the
TPWD currently is analyzing
the chemistry of waters in
coastal rivers to establish a
more extensive priority order
for future stocking programs.
"When this is completed we
should have an indication of
which areas arc best-suited for
establishing self-sustaining
populations of striped bass,”
he said.

Misses Mandy Jennings.
10-year-old daughter of Rusty
and Gaila Jennings, of Emory
has been the top Girl Scout
cookie seller for 2 years in a
row! Last year, with the help
of her dad and an aunt, she sold
over 700 boxes of cookies, and
hopes to sell even more this
year. “We want to do as much
for the girls as we can,” Mr.
Jennings commented, “and it
helps all of them to be able to
attend Girl Scout Camp.” All
proceeds collected from selling
cookies go toward Girl Scout
Camp, and enables the girls to
attend without having to be out
all of the expense themselves.
The list of prizes that the
girls can work toward earning
changes each year, with the
prizes this year being geared
more toward things for the
girls to take to camp. The first
year that Mandy was the top
seller, she won a telephone for
her bedroom, and last year she
won a nice colored television
set.
Mandy thoroughly enjoys
being in the Girl Scouts. Mrs.
Diane Willis is her troop
leader, with Mrs. Sherry
Zirges assisting. The group
meets every two weeks, and
usualjy learns something new
each time, whether it’s sewing,
making dough-art decorations
or cooking. And, sometimes
they will have a speaker atten-
ding.
Mandy also loves to play
sports - she’s been practicing
her moves with a basketball
lately, getting ready for the
new season of Little Dribblers,
with Mike Willis as her coach.
During the summer she played
T-ball and was proud to have
her own dad. Rusty Jennings,
as her coach.
Mandy is in the 4th grade
class of Mrs. Sherry Wright at
Rains Elementary this year,
and although she’s not quite
certain of what she’d like to do
when she’s grown, she thinks
she just might like to be an
Airline Stewardess. She has
quite a bit of experience in sell-
ing - who knows, maybe she'll
want to keep that in mind for
the future?
