Idol contest has
close competition
By Min da Rainier
Saturday night, November 29.
the Rural American Idol contest
wound down its weekly compe-
tition by choosing the next-to-
the-last semifinalist
The Cotton Pickin' theatre
was the arena for a challenge
between two men with different
musical and performance styles
Steve Fleet of Longview and
Tommie Gonzales of Galveston
matched their musical talent in a
toe-to-toe sing-off
Sieve Fleet, a 6’
green
eved, brown-haired singer, took
the stage with great ease and
gave the impression he was hav -
mg lots of fun. In the '70s. he
shared the stage with artists like
Steve Miller, Stev ie Ray Vaughn
and Eric Clapton But family
and responsibility came along
and Fleet put away his ram-
blings and settled down Now as
a simile dad free of responsibili-
ties. he has returned to the love
of his life music He is pursu-
ing a career through the opry cir-
cuit. fairs, festivals, and numer-
ous other engagements
Fleet's long absence from the
stage was not evident Saturday
night as lie captivated the audi-
ence vviili "I'll Leave tins World
Lovin' You’’ and "Mile Out of
Memphis," and drew a lot of
applause with his rendition of
“Folsom Prison Blues.” He fin-
ished his set with "I Had a Beau-
tiful Time" and definitely looked
like he did
His challenger, Tommie Gon-
zales, presented a completely
different style.
New to the opry circuit and
just now getting his feet wet
with on-stage performances.
Tommy drove all the way from
Galveston to have the opportuni-
ty to participate in the contest
His gutsy songs were self-writ-
ten and his presence on stage
was very serious. With his hat
pulled low over his eyes, the
pin-striped shirt and leather vest
gave him the look of a new Way-
Ion Jennings. The outlaw style
of music from deep Texas was a
wake-up call to all listeners that
a new voice is in town
Steve Fleet won the opportu-
nity to advance to the semifinals
by a narrow margin
Guest performers were
Valerie Dacus. Denton, and
Rural American Idol finalists
Julie White, Emory, and \ubrey
Burnley Tyler.
Julie was welcomed to the
stage by Freddie York as the
chicken goddess, because she is
the owner operator of the Chick-
en Shack in Emory Julie was
truly impassioned as she sang
"Cry," then showed her versatil-
ity with “Rockin' with the
Rhythm of the Ram "

Sweetheart" and yodeled her
heart out with the song Her
radiant smile comes out as she
does her act. most especially
when she sang “Stand By Your
Man" then flipped to the tune of
"Let Her Rip "
Keyboard player and singer
Valerie Dacus added flair to the
show with the jazzy old song
“All of Me." Bing Crosby's
"White Christmas” was splen-
didly sung reminding everyone
that ilie countdown for Christ-
mas is on.
Joe Mac Ivy 's trumpet blared
out magnificently as lie joined
the sounds of the band He sang
his most requested song. "Elvi-
ra.” backed up bv Joe Ben
Cason

ber 6, at 7:30. The six con-
