Spears, speaking for states
rights, mentioned that his
birthplace teas in South Caro-
lina. Shivers leveling a finger,
told Spears that it was in that
very state that a suit was Sled
to give a 14-year-old boy the
“right” to work in a cotton
mill. “That was at Charlotte,”
Shivers said.
“Charlotte is in North Caro-

Sep. Harry McKee of Port
Arthur new is being mention-
ed for the place on the Unem-
ployment Compensation Com-
mission to which Wallace Reil-
ly of Dallas, formerly was ap-
pointed. KcK.ee ha* discuss-
ed the matter with Gov. James
V. Allred who will make the
appointment. Trav Lewis of
Fort Worth also has been sug-
gested.
McKee took part in passage
of the bill creating the com-
mission. Ordinarily that bars
a member from accepting a
place, but McKee is said to be
eligible because the act was
passed at a former session of
the legislature and because
the post already has been held
by some one else.
The restriction was adopted
to prevent a member of the
legislature creating a job for
himself.

this session.
Petitions for contributions
to this and that funds have
been banned in the house.
It was Rep. Alfred Fetscb of
Fredericksburg who begged
his colleagues to call it quits,
and the house happily passed
his resolution just after Rep.
Lon K. Alsup of Carthage had
warned that the house was
sending too many baskets of
Sowers for insufficient cause.
“Flowers cost money, and
you’re going on record as a
very expensive legislature,”
Alsup warned seriously.
The Petseh resolution
leased everyone but Rep.
'erman Jones, who exclaim-
ed, “They cut out contributions
just when I’m thinking of get-
ting married.” Then he re-
treated with denials that he
had anything definite in mind.
A popular University of Tex-
as student before his election
to the legislature, Jones, is one
of the town’s ranking eligibles.

Rep. J. Doyle Settle of Lub-
bock believes be has a partial
solution for overcrowded state
buildings.
He has suggested certain
space in the Confederate Vet-
erans Homes be used for state
offices, and the House adopted
his resolution asking appoint-
inent of a committee to study
the plan.
Thinning in the ranks of the
veterans will force the state to
decide soon what it will do
with the two homes provided
for the old soldiers and Con-
federate widows. There have
been many suggestions, among
them admittance of World
War veterans to the homes.
