Wedeking resigns
EM post Thursday
Tuesday, October 18,2005 Bains Conntp Ltadtr
By CAROLYN HILL
Rains County Leader staff
Jon Wedeking surprised the
Rains County Commissioners
Court Thursday, October 13, by
resigning his post as Emergency
Management Coordinator for
the county.
He has held the unpaid posi-
tion for four years. At the time
he was appointed there was no
countywide plans in place to
deal with disasters such as tor-
nadoes and severe storms, dan-
gerous chemical spills, gas well
blow-outs, or other high-level
emergencies and no “chain of
command" in the event of such
emergencies.
According to his letter of res-
ignation, Wedeking said, “I feel
that 1 can better serve the citi-
zens of Rains County as the
Deputy Chief of the Emory Vol-
unteer Fire Department and as
an employee of the Northeast
Texas Public Health District."
1 He expressed regret at resign-
ing but noted that during his
tenure he along “with the help of
a great-number of volunteers,
have brought Rains County up
to the basic level of prepared-
ness according to the standards
set down by the state of Texas.”
Wedeking was the point-man

in making preparations for the
county’s response to the Hurri-
cane Katrina evacuees.
His tasks included alerting
and coordinating county efforts
with all county fire departments,
school officials, the Red Cross
and Salvation Army, the Good
Samaritans center, and Christian
Camp of the Living Word. He
also set up signature accounts
with several local businesses to
accept charges.
All of these activities were
done, before notifying the state
of Texas’ State Operations Cen-
ter that the county could accom-
modate up to 200 evacuees, if
needed.
Wedeking continued to serve
along with County Judge Joe
Dougherty as FEMA coordina-
tors once the evacuees arrived
and throughout the their stay in
the county.
The court took no action
Thursday on Wedeking’s resig-
nation but will place it on the
court’s next agenda.
New identity
theft scam
Identity theft scammers, pre-
tending to work for local courts,
are calling potential victims
with the news that they have
failed to report for jury duty and
that a warrant has been issued
for their arrest. They then ask
victims for personal confidential
information, including Social
Security numbers, birth dates
and credit card numbers for ver-
ification purposes. This is exact-
ly the information scammers
need to commit identity theft.
The jury duty scam is only
about three weeks old and has
already been reported in nine
states: Arizona, Illinois, Michi-
gan, Minnesota, Ohio, Oregon,
Pennsylvania, Texas and Wash-
ington.
In reality, court workers do
not call potential jurors and ask
for their Social Security num-
bers, credit card numbers and
other personal information
Most courts use snail, mail for
jury matters.
“Whereas it’s easy to avoid
many scams by simply using
common sense, it makes it much
easier to protect yourself if you
know about other scams in
advance,” said Dr. Audri G. Lan-
ford, co-editor of Internet Scam-
Busters.
Dear Rains County Leader,
First of all I would like to
state that I love the newspaper
being on the Internet. I live in
Tulsa, Oklahoma, and am not
able to get the Rains County
Leader like I use to, so bei^g
able to see the full newspaper
online is a big help.
1 read Kimberly Watkins’ let-
ter in the Public Forum and I
have to say that I totally agree
with her. My youngest sister is
an eighth grader at Rains Junior
High and I know that she didn’t
get to go to the Homecoming
pep rally, and I don’t think that’s
fair. When I was in junior high,
if a few kids got out of hand they
were removed from the situation
and punished, not the whole
school. I’m not saying that
Coach Flagg is a bad principal.
I’ve grown up knowing her and
she really is cool. I’m just say-
ing that her decision on punish-
ing the whole junior high for
what the now-sophomores in
high school did is not right at
all. Those kids are not getting
the memories that I and the
alumni before me have. I just
don’t think it’s right. Would
Coacfi Flagg think it fair if she
got punished for something that
one of her co-workers did? I
think not.
Before I go I would like to tell
the Rains Wildcat football team
that they’re doing a great job
and to keep up the good work.
Coach Little has done an out-
standing job with this football
team.
And to the Rains Wildcat
Band...! miss you guys and I
love you guys. Good Luck at
UIL marching contest and hope-
fully I’ll see you all soon.
Sincerely,
Serena Gautney

To the Editor,
Open letter to Emergency
Service District (ESD). How
dare you cancel SWRVFD?
How many of you live in the
area known as “Flats?” There is
nothing wrong with this fire
department. And if you close
SWRVFD? Point says they will
build another one. Why?
Who is going to pay for
another station, and why, when
there is a fully qualified staff at
SWRVFD. You got what you
wanted. You got rid of
Parkhurst. I guess you can’t
stand a strong- willed woman.
How 19th century.
Why are you going to punish
the citizens of this county
because you have a personal
complaint with one’^erson?
I live in Flats and 1 love where
I’m at. If you alienate SWRVFD
who will staff another station
when all the hard work the vol-
unteers have put in can be can-
celled at your whim?
To the citizens of this county:
We have no full-time fire depart-
ment on staff here so why
should the ESD cancel any help
we can get. It’s a volunteer sys-
tem. The ESD obviously does
not care about us, only their
petty disputes.
If the ESD can cut out
SWRVFD, who is next? When
your house or property is on fire
it’s VOLUNTEERS who will be
responding. If VOLUNTEERS
are not felt welcome then why
should they serve? The job they
do is full of danger and tney do
it for no money.
Are the members of the ESD
fireman? Will they be there at
3:00 a.m. at a house fire or a bad
traffic accident? We, the citizens
of this county don’t need politi-
cians who punish us for their
disputes. Every fire department
person deserves an applause and
a thank you for the job they do.
To the ESD: Why take away
SWRVFD? I vote they stay, no
matter what the ESD says.
Sincerely,
Craig W. Rowell
