Icy bridge contributes
to toddler’s death

Icy bridge conditions con-
tributed to the death of a 14-
month-old toddler early Tues-
day morning. December 16,
after the vehicle she was riding
in ran off the bridge and into
Lake.Fork in Wood County.
Alanna Jisha was pro-
nounced dead at 1:03 a.m.
POINT
Tuesday, about two hours after
the family vehicle driven by
her father Kent Jisha, 37, of
Yantis with passenger and
mother Ramy Jisha, 37, slid on
the icy bridge while crossing
the lake and plunged into the
water.
The accident occurred
around 11:00 p.m. Monday
night during one of the coldest

lighting Contest
Haul out the glittering lights, string up the tinsel
stars, drape all the garland, ribbons and bows
’cause the city of Emory is lookin’ for the best dis-
play in its annual Emory Christmas Lighting Coi-
\&Jl.
Judging to determine the top decorated homes in
the city will be held Wednesday night, December
24. Residents of the city who wish to have their
homes considered in die contest are requested to
leave their outside Christmas lights and decora-
tions on until 9:00 p.m.
Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and
third place winners. Good luck and happy decorat-
ing!

The Emory Development Corpora- j
tion (EDC) approved a revolving loan
fund application from Chubby’s Diner
for up to $28,446 for the purchase of
equipment during a special boardmeet-
ing at 3:00 on Friday, December Id.
The kitchen area of the restaurant
was severely damaged by fire recently,
and the rest of the building received
-»heuvy smoke damage. Chubby’s,
which is* owned by Kenny and Karen
Young, was not covered by insurance at
the time of the tire.
There has beep a tremendous
amount of support from the community
* to help the Youngs repair and fenovaje
the building, with nearly all the work
^.donated by volunteers.
The Youngs are taking this opportu-,
nity to expand the size of the building
and make needed-improvements, such
as installing an ADA-accessible rest-
room and front door, and modernizing
Jthe layout of the kitchen. A fire-rated
vented hood will also bejnstattfed.
Oth&V equipment will include free/ •
ers, a dishwasher, fryers, grill, ice
machine, oven/stove'top, refrigerators
stainless steel tables, steam table, prep
table, bread warmer, dish cart, heal
lamp, microWave oven, rinse
faucet/sink, shelving, toaster, and mis-
cellaneous kitchen items.
A new central heat and air unit, with
accompanying duct work, is among the
new; equipment that will be installed.
The building will also have all neW
electrical wiring, cables, panels and
fixtures to assure it will meet the lire

The rebuilding of the restaurant will
retain 12 jobs.
The EDC offers a variety of support
for local businesses. While most people
are aware of the high-profile projects
like the Terry’s Furniture Distribution
Center, the Ivan Smith Furniture Incen
five Project, or the Hooten’s Hardware
expansion, many businesses have bene-
fited from the EDC’s efforts that may
not be readily recognized.
According to Clyde Smith, director
of the EDC, Compliance Grants Jo
seven businesses for a total of $20,760
were awarded to help Emory business
es comply with changing regulations,
such as ADA (Americans with Disabil
ities Act) accessibility, and installing
grease traps and backflow prevention
devices.

Unlike recent meetings, the
Point pity Council conducted a
short /45-minute meeting Tues-
day Evening, December 16. tak-
ing care of the city’s business in
1 an orderly, professional manner.
The council approved three
applications for its Texas
Department of Housing and
Community Affairs (TDHCA)
$250,000 HOME grant. Mayor
Charlene Harmon said that an e-
- mail from TDHCA recommend-
ed the applications of Laura
House, Sharon Rucker, arrd
Billy Harris. If the three home-
owners continue to meet the
requirements of the’grant, new
homes. Will be built on their
present homesites.

city had another applicant who
could possibly he etigibile. The
city will continue to seek appli-
cants on a first-come, first-
served basis until all five of the
available allotted slots with the
grant are filled.
The grant requires that the
approved homeowners make’1
their own arrangements to move
out of their homes in order for
the buildings to be razed and the
dew homes to be erected on site.
The home must be homeowner-
occupied.
Grant applications are avail-
able at the Point City Hall.
Regarding the HOME grant,
an agenda item to select a
builder for the reconstruction
program was tabled at the
mayor's request.

of Precinct 1, which includes

2009. Stella Busby of Emory
was then ratified, received the
Oath of Office from Mayor
Buster Thomas and took her

new secretary.
Before Marshall’s resigna-
tion, several council members,
with tongues in cheeks, asked
what would happen if they did-
n’t accept her resignation.
With a smile, Marshall said

bers to be as cooperative and
helpful to Busby as they had
always been to her.
