worthwhile and admira-

far as I’m concerned,

grandchildren ranks
right up there at the top.
There are so many in
today’s world, and Linda
Smith is one of those
selfless individuals
who’s done it and loved
every minute of it.

Veterans honored with
awe-inspiring program
Ladies, get out those fancy
duds and, men, dust off those
jeans and jackets and get ready
for the the Rains County
Chamber of Commerce’s
annual Awards Banquet on
Thursday, Nov. 20, at 6:30
p.m. at the Heritage Center on
Hwy. 276. This year’s theme is
“Denim and Lace.”
“Business of the Year"
awards will be presented to
outstanding businesses in
Emory, Point, East Tawakoni
and Rains County. Service
recognition awards will also be
presented. There will not be a
keynote speaker this year.
Following a delicious meal
served by Vicki’s Cakes and
Catering, guests will be treated
to musical entertainment by an
up-and-coming acoustic music
duo called “Back Roads”
made up of cousins Jemma
Jacobs and Kevin Hankins of
Pickton. The name refers to
where they grew up in East
Texas. Both have been
involved in music most of their
lives and recently decided to
join forces to make their mark
on the Texas music scene.
Kevin is a southern rock-
influenced guitarist, while
Jemma’s influence is soulful
blues. Their mix results in a
“gut-wrenching,” “feel-it-in-
your-soul” version of Texas
crossover country tunes.
The duo recently beat out
several other bands to win the
Stampede Stars competition,
which entitled them to perform
at the Texas Stampede at the
American Airlines Center in
Dallas on Sunday, Nov. 9.
They were also featured on
Fox 4 TV following their win.
The chamber invites every-
one to come out for an evening
of fun, food and fellowship.
Cost is $15 per person for the
meal.

Again this year Rains High School honored
America’s veterans with an awe-inspiring pro-
gram on November 11.
From the welcome address by RHS Assistant
Priticipal Josh Williams and a recitation of “The
Meaning of Veterans Day” by RISD Superin-
tendent David Seago to the playing of “Taps”
by RHS band member Savannah Wright and the
benediction from David Smith, U.S. Army,
Retired, this year’s program is considered one
of the very best since the school began honoring
Veterans in 1998.
The highlight of each Veterans Day program
is the beautiful Service Candlelighting Ceremo-
ny. Narrated by RHS teacher/coach Andy
Breaux, the ceremony honors each branch of
the military and the widows of Veterans.
Lighting of candles honoring each military
branch of the service was carried out by: Army,
Harold Carr; Navy, Tracy Rosson: Coast Guards
Phil Rennaker; Marines, Kurt Fischer; and Air
Force, Ivan Alexander. Winnie Lyles lit the can-
dle for all Veteran widows.
