F lags arc still (lying at half
staff in honor of the nation's
40th president, Ronald Reagan.
He died of Alzheimer’s on June
5 at age 93 at his home in Simi
Valley, California, with wife
Nancy at his side.
Reagan was given the first
state funeral in Washington,
D.C. since the Lyndon Johnson
funeral 31 years ago. President
Bush declared F riday, June 11. a
national day of mourning, and
all federal offices were closed
except those involved in nation-
al security.
The former president lay in
state in the Capitol Rotunda
June 9 and 10, with more than
200.000 people filing past to
view the casket. On Friday, June
11, a motorcade departed with
thousands of onlookers watch-
ing Mr. Reagan's flag-draped
casket as it was carried on a
black artillery caisson pulled by
six matched horses. A riderless
horse, with Mr. Reagan’s boots
turned backward in the stirrups,
marched behind the caisson -
symbolic of a warrior w ho will
not fight again, looking back on
his troops.
Reagan's body then arrived at
the Washington National Cathe-
dral where his funeral took
place. Eulogies were given by
President George W. Bush, for-
mer President George H. W.
Bush, former British Prime Min-
ister Margaret Thatcher (taped)
and former Canadian Prime
Minister Brian Mulroney. Many
world leaders and dignitaries
attended the service.
His body was then returned to
the Ronald Reagan Presidential
Library in California for inter-
ment with rememberences by
children Michael Reagan, Patti
Davis and Ronald Prescott Rea-
gan
As with all presidents, Reagan
had his critics, but most agreed
that time heals all wounds He
was well known for his eternal
optimism and profoundly exem
plified that quality when he dis
closed that he had Alzheimer’s
disease. He wrote, “1 now begin
the journey that will lead me
into the sunset of my life. I know
that for America there will
always be a bright dawn ahead "
