inheritance taxes.

Tomatoes fricassee. Tomatoes a
I’orange. Tomato bisque. Tomato
ice cream?
Stop! Please, my family begged
me. Stop with the tomatoes, al-
ready.
I think it was when I seriously
consideied plunking chopped toma-
toes over the Wheaties that I knew
I’d overstepped the bounds of my
family’s tolerance for the tomatoes
that are inundating our garden this
year. The right combination of
rain, sun and tolerable summer
temperatures has more than com-
pensated for the crop devastation
of last year’s wretched triple-digit
temperatures and cruel drought.
Get creative, I said to myself.
Stick with the basics - Italian
food, sauces, salads - that’s the
stuff one expects to find chock full
of tomatoes. So, with a little
mad-gardener’s ingenuity, I’m
sharing with fellow tomato farmers
the following recipe. Not only does
it use up a few tomatoes, but it
makes you feel really, really
happy. Try it with a glass of nice
wine and you’ll be even happier.

We had a good crowd at church
Sunday and for the luncheon that
we had for Bro. Neil Wade and
family.
It was good to see , ela Fitzger-
ald at church Sunday night.

HIGHLAND NEWS
By Atha Dedmon
Al Locke, associate pastor of
Highland Baptist Church, preached
a wonderful sermon Sunday night.
It was brief, but right to the point.
We are happy to report that
Dorothy Bays is home from the
hospital and doing really well. She
had corrective surgery done Friday
and came home Saturday.
Patsy Moon and Kathy Holden,
Dorothy’s stepdaughters, along
with Pearl Keith, Irene Brown and
I spent most of the day at the
hospital with her, waiting for the
doctor to see her. Flaving surgery
is bad enough, but being there,
ready, and having to wait is pure
torture.
R.L. and Merlene Sparks were in
to see her too.
Thurston and Norma Nell House
enjoyed a visit from Emile
(Frenchie) and wife Jeri Hotard
from Reserve, LA Sunday. He and
Thurston were buddies in the
Navy, stationed in Norman, Okla.
during WWII. They have stayed in
touch since 1943. Jessie Rippetoe
and B.W. and Olene Mathis came
over and visited too. The whole
family got to know him real well
because he came home with Thur-
ston quite often.
I guess Jessie Rippetoe is finally
“done” with celebrating her 99th
birthday. Her last outing was with
her nieces, Pearl Keith, Irene
Brown and Ila Mae Bays. Besides
visiting Altha Fair and La Juan
Mow, they enjoyed some time with
Marshall and Dottie Reeves then
went to lunch in De Leon.
I was really pleased to have my
grandson, Don Bair and his family
from Houston, with me all day
Saturday.
There are two kinds of people in
the work world: Those who do the
work and those who take the
credit. Try to be in the first group;
there is much less competition
there.
Ann Cole was in Fort Worth
Friday to visit her daughter, Sherri
Keils. They took her out to eat
celebrating her birthday the 23rd.
Grandson Josh Keils left Saturday
for two years in Alaska. He is in
the service.
Harold and Barbara Miller,
daughter, Kelley, and son are
spending a few days at their farm
here. I visited with them at Wan-
da's after church Sunday night.
Bro. Neil Wade and family were
also there. <
Wednesday, Oma Lee Brawley,
Bonnie, Ronnie II and Monnie
visited with Janiece Pettijohn, also
Sarah, Shannon, Sydni and Daniel.
Thursday, Guy and Twyla Brad-
ford, Britan and Brady were there
and cousin, Meagan. Friday, Bon-
nie, Monnie and Ronnie II came
and did chores as well as visiting
and went home Saturday.
Leidon Barbee got tangled up
with a large rattlesnake last
Wednesday at the bam. I think he
will not be going back by himself
any time soon.
Wanda Davidson and I helped
the people at People’s Nursing
Center celebrate birthdays Monday.
