Does He Live in Our Town?
r • He will await his turn at the ticket window
or in other public places cheerfully; he will
stand patiently while the clerk in the slrtre
v nits on the customers ahead of him. liut
when the telephone operator takes a few
seconds longer than u-ual to answer his call
he swells all up and says the service is
“rotten.”
He can see that the clerk and the ticket
seller are busy, but he cannot see the tele-
phone operator—so he thinks she must be
lazy, or “asleep!”
He forgets that others are frequently
ahead of him at the telephone switchboard,
the same as at the ticket window or in the
store; that calls are coming in in rapid suc-
cession and must be answered in their turn;
that when half a dozen subscribers all call
at the same time, they can’t all be answered
first!
