he would be participating in the
national "Click It or Ticket” seat-
belt safety campaign. He com-
mended the city on the Founder’s
Day activities. Feagin also par-
ticipated in the annual Child
Safety Program, which, if plans
can be solidified, will be com-
bined with Founder's Day activi-
ties next year.
Public Works Director Maxie
Chester also gave his monthly
report. Given the recent prob-
lems arising from lighting strik-
ing the water department's com-
puter, he was happy to report
everything is working at this
time.
Clyde Smith gave his monthly
planning update. He said the city
Dear Kdilor:
We have just finished a
Memorial Day weekend in
which much honor was paid
WWII veterans and Viet Nam
veterans, and they should have
such honor. ! looked in vain in
our local paper to see or hear
honor paid to Korean veterans.
That conflict has been called
"The Forgotten War.” Well, I was
there, along with thousands of
other men (a few women) who
haven't forgotten.
It was pointed out by various
speakers that more than 58,000
of our guys lost their lives in Viet
Nam during 12-15 years of ser-
vice there. Well, 38,<XX)+ of our
guys gave their lives in Korea in
just three years! We lost large
numbers in very short periods of
time. Perhaps over one million
South Koreans were killed and
(we don’t hear about this) very
large numbers of North Koreans
and Chinese men were killed. 1
imagine there were a large num-
ber of mothers crying bitter tears
over their sons on both sides of
the 38th parallel. Please, God!
Don’t let it happen again!
I abhor war and violence, but
we should honor all those who
experienced the horrors of war if
we are to honor any. PLEASE
don't forget Korean veterans
again!

Dear Editor,
Mitzi Horne of East Tawakoni
asked if anyone had a solution to
the stray dog and cat problems
facing our area. Well, Mitzi, I do.
We need a no-kill animal shel-
ter! How do we go about getting
one, you might ask? First, we
need a person to take on this
task. Second, we need volunteers
to help. Then we can ask the
SPCA to allow our new animal
shelter to sign on under their
non-profit tax-free status. This
allows donations from the public
and businesses to be tax de-
ductible. Third, we raise money.
A good start would be to ask
Terry's Furniture if the shelter
can have their now-empty ware-
house. Several different counties
surrounding Emory arc in des-
perate need of shelters; perhaps
they would cost-share. Wood and
Hopkins Counties come to mind.
Maybe the city of Emory could
donate to the project and make
the land and building tax free.
Three counties, churches,
schools, civic groups and area
recently received a record all-
time-high sales tax rebate and
anticipates continued growth.
Smith said he is working on
three very high-quality prospects
that should be in Emory within
twelve months and employ 70
people.
Emory recently qualified for a
$32,600 planning grant that will
allow a study of population, land
use, streets, recreation and parks,
etc. with lots and lots of maps.
The city’s matching portion is
$500.
A short executive session was
held to discuss water contracts
and real property. No action was
taken after reconvening in open
session.
businesses could all pitch in.
Just think of it...a state-of-the-
art animal shelter, low- or no-
cost spay and neutering, animals
off the streets getting the care
they need and the love they
deserve. A place that turns no
animal away and always works
towards adoption would set an
example for others to follow. We
could name the new shelter
“Terry’s Tri-County Animal
Rescue.” We can do this!
What can animal lovers do to
help? Is there someone out there
willing to step up to the plate and
head up this project? They would
be doing the community a great
service, and I’m sure they would
find plenty of help and support.

Saturday is the last Saturday in
May, therefore the trash drop-off
and recycling center will be
open. It is located in Point on
Locust Drive (the service road to
Hwy. 69) next to the funeral
home. The hours are 8:(X) a.m.
until 5:00 p.m., but the facility
will be closed for lunch. The
charge for trash is $6 per cubic
yard, with no charge for recycle
items.
Because of my job, it often-
times seems like litter is every-
where. If you wake up and some
jerk has thrown a beer can, styro-
foam cup or an old couch in front
of your house, you may feel that
way also. Well, I’ve got some
good news for you and a predic-
tion.
First the good news. The most
important part of any community
is the blessing of God. God has
certainly blessed us with a good
climate, fertile soil, beautiful
flowers and animals and some
great lakes. Another vital com-
ponent of a community is its
people. Keep Texas Beautiful
recently had a meeting in Austin
and the only reason anyone
would attend is because of a gen-
uine interest in beautification.
Out of approximately 50 people
from throughout Texas, three
were from Rains G>unty - by far
the greatest percentage of popu-
lation represented. 1 am con-
vinced that Rains County has the
most beautiful people to be
found anywhere.
I am out of space. Next week,
more good news and a predic-
tion.
