House Shower to
In Memory of Mother
A memorial service for Ina
Vaye Cowan was held October
17 at First Baptist Church, fol-
lowed by interment at Live
Oak Cemetery. Dean Bradley,
long-time friend and former
pastor, conducted the service
and brought the message.
Dr. Paul Hodges’ eulogy for
his Aunt lna V aye was con-
cluded with a selection of
scriptures. Friends, Nina Rae
Schrader, Bob Traweek, the
First Baptist Women's
Ensemble, and Fannie
Chambers provided music in
tribute to one who had sung in
the choir of First Baptist
Church for more than 40 years.
Pallbearers were Mrs.
Cowan's nephews: Glen
Hodges, Harold Ross, Bob
Hodges, Johnny Cowan, John
Hodges, Billy Jess Cowan,
Wayland Hodges, Robert
Hodges, and W.C. "Red" Ross.
(Every nephew, every niece
was a "favorite.")
Ina V aye was the daughter
of Walter Wyatt and Percy Lee
Hodges, having been bom in
Comanche County near De
Leon in 1915. The Hodges
family had come to Texas from
Mississippi at the turn of the
century, and the Lees had
come a little earlier from
Alabama.
Ina V aye became Mrs. Sam
Cowan, her most favorite
name, December 8, 1933. Sam
and Ina V aye were high school
sweethearts at "dear, old
Comyn" having graduated in
1931 and 1932.
A daughter, Mary Helen,
and a son, James Wyatt, tied
for second place in her life.
Later, that became a four-way
tie when Dick Yantis and Gaye
Ann Harbin entered the pic-
ture. It multiplied with seven
adored grandchildren and
seven adored great- grandchil-
dren.
Since May of 1934, the fam-
ily has resided in Dublin, with
exception of the early World
become bookkeeper for Cowan
Machine Co.
Ina Vaye became a
Christian early in life, moved
her church membership from
Round Grove to First Baptist
Dublin in 1934, and served
faithfully almost 70 years. She
very actively supported the
school and community in
many areas- Whether helping
raise funds to buy those
"Shamrock" chaps for the band
or taking a car load of young
people on a promotional tour
putting out rodeo posters in
West Texas, she was backing
her kids and her town.
Ina Vaye had great appreci-
ation of all of the men and
women of the military. She
treasured her membership in
the American Legion
Auxiliary, where she served as
an officer many years. There
were numerous poppy sales
and blood drives for helping
those in the military hospitals.
And, there were patriotic cele-
brations and educational pro-
grams for training the next
generation.
She was a charter member
of the Dublin Historical
Society and was a genial host-
ess at the Historical Museum
until her health declined. Even
then, she would bake cakes for
any fund-miser, buy supplies
and "cheer lead" every week.
Also, for several years she was
active in the Eastern Star .
As the four granddaughters
entered the picture and she
delighted in making their
clothes, Ina Vaye had to cut
back on some activities.
.Surviving Ina V aye are her
husband, Sam; her daughter
and son-in-law, Mary and Dick
Yantis; her son and daughter-
in-law Dr. James and Gaye
Cowan. Additionally, there are
her grandchildren and their
families: Mike and Melissa
Yantis; Dan and Tami Yantis;
Susan and Tom Martin; Kathy
and Rod Beard, Cindy and Don
Knight, Debbie and David
Ward, and Jim Cowan. The
bisdtlit mix,toast£?“ strudels,
dessert, and a dozen fresh eggs.
