Did You Know.
COLORADO—Leadville (pop. 2,629) is the
highest incorporated town in the United States. At
about 10,152 feet, the community has been nick-
named “The Cloud Gty.”
MONTANA—The U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry
Bicycle Corps was formed in 1888 at Fort Missoula
to test the military potential of bicycles. The corps
took part in several short journeys before riding -
their bikes 1,900 miles to St. Louis. The soldiers
returned to Montana by train when the Army
decided the bicycle would never replace the horse.
Missoula today is considered one of the top 10 bicy-
cling communities in the United States.
Montana’s deer population, spread out over its
147,046 square miles, amounts to 3.3 deer per
square mile. By contrast, the state lias six people
per square mile.
NEW MEXICO—The world’s largest enchila-
da is made every October at the Las Cruces “Whole
Enchilada Fiesta.” The enchilada is made with 750
pounds of stone-ground corn (for rhe tortillas), 75
gallons of red chile sauce, 175 pounds of grated
cheese, and 50 pounds of chopped onions.
The Capulin Volcano, rising more than 1,000 feet
above the plains near Raton (pop. 7,372), is one of
the most symmetrical volcanic cinder cones in the
United States. The volcano is believed to be about
62,000 years old.
O K L A H O M A—A collection of artifacts mark-
ing the life and times of silent movie star Tom Mix
is in Dewey (pop. 3,326), where he served for a brief
time as the town marshal. Mix moved to Oklahoma
in the 1900s and was discovered by a movie pro-
ducer in 1911 while working as a cowboy. He made
336 feature films between 1909 and 1935. Items on
display at the Ton? Mix Museum include his saddle,
pistols, clothing, and a life-size replica of his horse,
Tony the Wonder Horse.
TEXAS—Mysterious globes of fight that can be
seen near Marfa (pop. 2,424) shortly after sundown
have captivated the residents and visitors for more
than a century. The town has established a viewing
area where dozens of cars can be found on good
nights as people watch the “Marfa Mystery lights."
The cause of the lights has yet to be determined,
although some theories attribute them to phospho-
rescent minerals, static electricity, or even reflected
car headlights.
WYOMING—During Prohibition, a potent
drink known as “Kemmerer Moon” could be
found at speakeasies across the country. The boot-
legging industry in Kemmerer (pop. 3,020)
became so active that the town earned the nick-
name “Little Chicago.” . J
