Methodist church continue
traditions of Lord's Acre
From their beginnings, the
Evangelical United Brethren
Church and the Methodist
Church had a close relationship.
Both churches throughout histo-
ry ran a course that paralleled
each church’s beliefs. The pio-
neers in the traditions that
flowed together-The Wesley's,
Albrights, Otterbein, Boehm-
understood themselves as stand-
ing in the center stream of
Christian spirituality and doc-
trine, loyal heirs to all that was
best in the Christian past. Their
gospel was rooted in the biblical
message of God's gracious
response to a person's deep need
and in his self-giving love
revealed in Jesus Christ. Thus
in its founding year the union
became the United Methodist
Church.
The United Methodist
Church in Dublin was estab-
lished in 1882. The original
building of the Dublin First
United Methodist Church on
North Patrick Street was con-
structed before 1900 and burned
in 1927. The majestic old stone
structure that stood on North
Patrick in the same location was
completed in or around 1928-
1929.
In 1979 this old building was
tom down and replaced by a
modern complex on Highland
Avenue. The building commit-
tee for the present building was:
Mr. & Mrs. Dean Bradley,
Mack Brown, Joey Billingsley,
Mr. & Mrs. Robert Crouch, Mr.
& Mrs. Glen Duncan, Mrs.
W.C. Hancock, Mr. & Mrs.
Dick Harbin, W.R. Heizer, Mrs.
Harlen Raley, Jay Watson and
Mrs. Elma Ruth Wheatley.
Reverend A.J. Wormwood was
the pastor at this time. During
the past fifty years many new
additions have been made in the
present facility.
In the sixties under the lead-
ership of then pastor Reverend
Eugene Robertson, the idea of
the present church on Highland
Avenue was conceived. At this
time the Lord's Acre program
was adopted as a means of
adding to the building fund with
a "Country Store" and "Auction-
Dinner." Today the funds raised
during the two-day event go
toward various mission projects
within the church.
The Lord's Acre has seen
many homes during the past
forty plus years. During con-
struction of the new present
church, the event was held in the
high school cafeteria on
Camden Street under the leader-
ship of Madeline Looney and
Anne Hancock. After the Lena
Heizer Family Center was pur-
chased the event was moved to
the Highland Avenue center
until the mid 1990s when the
present Clay Center Annex was
added to the church. I bis center
was named in memory of long-
time Dublin citizens Iona and
Francis Clay.
The Lord's Acre will be held
this year following its original
format, with a Country Store,
Auction and Dinner. Also
added years ago is a Friday
lunch. All events will be held at
the church on 630 Highland
Avenue. The Baked Potato and
Salad lunch on Friday will be
served from 11 a.m. until I p.m.
in the Church Fellowship Hall
or delivered if you prefer.
Lunch is $5.00.
On Saturday morning the
Country Store will kick off the
days events. Opening at 8 a.m.
until 3 p.m. the store will feature
beautiful handmade clothing,
arts and crafts, and fresh baked
goods to get everyone into the
holiday spirit.
Beginning at 5 p.m. a deli-
cious fried fish dinner will be
served with all the trimmings:
baked potatoes, green beans,
homemade desserts, bread and
drinks in the Chruch Fellowship
Hall. Tickets for this event are
Adults $7.00. Children $5.(X).
Following the meal at 7 p.m.
will he the traditional auction of
items made and donated by
church members.
The church today continues
to have so many talented and
gifted people who work long
and hard hours preparing for the
Lord's Acre. The chairmen of
this year's events are Melanie
and Ronnie Belew. Ronnie
Barnett, the current pastor,
encourages everyone to come
and enjoy this special occasion.
The celebration is designed to
be a community wide event and
for more information call the
church office at 445-2157.
