The Woman's Thursday
Club met October 2nd at the
Lyon-Prim Museum, with
Melinda Hammonds as hostess.
Seventeen members were
greeted with plump pumpkins
and beautiful chrysanthemums
at the entrance door. Delicious
finger foods were served from a
decorative fall table. Frances
Jumey presided over the meet-
ing.
Secretary .Kathy Logan
Introduced the program,
"Entrepeneurs", with the fol-
lowing quote from Mary Kay
Ash: " Aerodynamically the
bumble bee shouldn't be able to
tly, but the bumble bee doesn’t
know it so it goes on flying
anyway." Member Billie Jean
Mayes gave an interesting pro-
gram on Michael Dell. Stanley
Marcus, Herb Kelleher, and
Ross Perot.
Michael Dell, CEO of Dell
Computers in Round Rock,
bought his first computer at age
fifteen he promptly began to
take it apart to see how it.
worked. He was named
"Entrepeneur of the Century"
by Texas Monthly Magazine in
1999. Today at age 38, Dell is
the 2nd richest man in Texas,
being worth 13 billion dollars.
The late Stanley Marcus,
known as the " Merchant
Prince", is remembered by
many for showmanship and an
emphasis on personal service to
customers. In 1950 he became
CEO of Neiman Marcus.
Herb Kelleher. chairman,
president, and CEO of
Southwest Airline;*, has been
called "perhaps the best CEO in
America" by Fortune
Magazine. Kelleher practiced
law previous to Southwest
Airlines and holds no business
degree. He credits these early
experiences as a trial lawyer for
his success, stating simply to
"be true to yourself".
Ross Perot, founder of
Electronic Data Systems, is
known for his business savy.
Worth 37 billion dollars, Perot
ran unsuccessfully for
President of the U.S. twice. He
began a crusade to lobby for the
release of American I’OWs in
Vietnam in 1969. Perot current-
ly works from his 17th floor
Dallas office.
The next meeting will be
Oct 16 in the home of Ora Bea
Burnett. Wilma Greer will give
the program on "Outstanding
Texas Sports figures".
Good stuff
If anyone has forgotten how
special first birthdays are, just
ask proud grandparents Jim and
Pat Harrell.
Sam. son of Jennifer and
Emory Osgood of Austin, was
the star of the show at the BIG
party last week at Andy and
Debbie Harrell’s home.
There were several dozen
people to help celebrate, as it
just happened to be Granddad
Jim's birthday and a family
reunion of Grandmother Pat's
family.
Memories are made of such
stuff. The pictures of Sam and
his banana and whipped cream
cake extravaganza will long tell
the story. That was six layers,
wasn't it? Grandmothers DO
such things!
One of the prettiest spots in
Dublin these days is in the City
Park at he west end of the swim-
ming pool. In what was the kid-
die pool several years ago, a
lovely flower garden has been
created by the Keep Dublin
Beautiful volunteers.
Thanks to Dr. Harlan and
Eddie Raley, Tom and Judy
Gordon, Laura Hutchins, and
Mary Yantis for sprucing it up
for the fall.
The benches have been re-
painted, beautiful seasonal flow-
ers have been added, and exten-
sive weeding and trimming has
transformed the area. Very
soon, the pool fence will be
extended with help from the
city; and further landscaping is
planned by Keep Dublin
Beautiful.
Hats off to the Dublin Middle
School for all of the prepara-
tions they made for their first-
ever "Reward Afternoon” last
Friday.
Several guest speakers made
presentations intended for
enjoyment and enrichment at
the conclusion of the first six
weeks work.
The administration, faculty
and staff, and student body did a
great job! It is impressive to go
into a school where things are
neat and squeaky-clean, the stu-.
dents are orderly and respectful,
and there are so many smiles.
Several of the students were
hosts and hostesses and could
not have been more friendly and
helpful.
What great leadership train-
ing! It is "good stuff' to discov-
er what is happening in Dublin
schools.

Wednesday from a vacation of
nearly two weeks. She had a
good time but was happy to be
home and Bud was happy to
have her home. AH four of her
children, grandchildren and
greats have missed her too. All
were here over the weekend.
We had a good crowd
Saturday night at the
Community meeting. Ed Autery
did a good job cooking the ham-
burgers. Joe and Merle Vincent
and her sister Doris went
Saturday evening to see Frank
and Rita Barbee and the Barbee
house that they have restored.
Sorry to report Sherry
Hansard is in the Harris
Methodist Hospital in Fort
Worth. We pray for a quick
recovery. Harold and Barbara
Miller are here at this farm for a
few days. Always good to see
them.
We really did enjoy the 1/2
inch of rain early Monday morn-
ing.
J.C. and Neva Smith had lots
of company and had them at the
Hamburger supper at the
Community meeting.
Bro. Aeron and Gladys Oden
had his twin brother and wife
visit them Monday morning. I
