Rafting with the Cottonwood Baptists
By Sam Richardson
Special to the Citizen
Big Bend National Park and
the Rio Grande have been the
main attractions for adventure
travelers to this area for years.
The primo trips on the river
have always been through Santa
Elena Canyon. Depending on
water conditions, we row
upstream or down, but either
way, Santa Elena is where the
adventurer wants to be.
Downstream rafting trips of
one, two, or three days have
given visitors the chance to
enjoy solitude, the camaraderie
of the campfire, good food,
exercise, and high adventure.
High water or low, the wager of
a few hours or a few days in a
natural setting without techno-
logical amenities has been a
venue for peak experience.
In Santa Elena Canyon there
are times of imploding silence
that clear away all the compli-
cated mental graffiti of life and
let caller sit quietly and invite
his soul. At other times, there is
the roar of the river and the
adrenaline rush of busting
through the Rock Slide rapid at
high water.
River outfitters in the Big
Bend have added some new
trips in the past few years. One
is called "The Boomerang." You
row upstream in canoes, stop,
have lunch, take a short hike,
then row back downstream and
take out where you put in.
A few weeks ago, I had the
chance to hitch a ride on the
boomerang with Big Bend River
Tours. Guests for the day were
Wes Bishop, Mike Martin,
Dusky Wright, Brandon
Merriman, Randy Merriman,
Allen Vander Horst, and Kevin
Wenzel, a group of gentlemen
from the Cottonwood Baptist
Church in Dublin.
Our guides for the day were
James Oik and Lorn
Willingham.
We put in at about a quarter
to ten on a Friday morning and
headed upstream at a relaxed
pace. Sky above, river below,
canyon all around. Its walls
soon closed in as our expedition
swung into the current. If the
walls of Santa Elena Canyon
could speak, they'd tell of shift-
ing currents and sand and gravel
bars. But from just above the
water to the canyon rim, nothing
has changed in millions of
years.
With each bend of the river
new surreal limestone shapes
appeared before us and a sense
of wonder set in. Our canoes
dodged and darted into patches
of shades and away from gravel
bars and kept moving at a steady
pace.
An hour or so later, we pulled
out for lunch, an efficiently laid
out sandwich bar, created in just
a few minutes by James and
Lorn.
After lunch, we hiked into
Fern Canyon, did some moder-
ate level rock climbing, and

took dips in the clear pools that
collect in the canyon's infinite
maze of crevices.
The return trip was easy.
Floating downstream in the cur-
rent required little rowing. The
river became our porter. Way up
high, silhouetted against patches
of sky, hawks and vultures rode
the thermals. Just above our
heads, smaller birds darted back
and forth, going about their
business. And there was the
constant decelerating and

descending notes of the canyon
wren's song. Little has changed
there in centuries.
At day's end, our guests
appeared happy - a little tanned,
a little tired, a little wet, a little
muddy, but contented. They are
camped nearby, so we dropped
them off and headed back to the
boathouse.
Among my rewards from a
day spent in Santa Elena
Canyon was the good company
of the gentlemen frdm Dublin
and Hico and a few days later, I
received a bonus - a box of
chocolates from Kevin Wenzel
of Wiseman House in Hico.
Little did I know, I had been rid-
ing with a famous chocolatier.
Rarely has there been a disap-
pointed traveler in Santa Elena.
There is something eternal
about the space, something that
brings us back regardless of
fickled water levels because it is
everything above the water that
we come to see and experience
first.
But the main thing guides
James and Lorn and 1 will
remember is the fun we had on
the boomerang with the
Cottonwood Baptists.

for what you do to
help make
‘Dublin
a fatten- place fo live
Dedication
Little Guy Football is said to be help-
ing this year's Dublin Lions as many of |
those playing have gone through the pro-
gram since it was started about 7 years
ago.
That program has a dedicated group of |
people teaching these young men the
fundamentals of the game so they can be
ready to play at a higher level.
At the helm of this program for the
past five years has been Donna Williams.
All of the individuals involved do a great
job but the bulk of the responsibility of |
getting things organized is the job of the
president of the league.
There's a lot of details involved, rais-
ing money for equipment and uniforms,
getting coaches, making out schedules
and the list goes on and on.
We appreciate the work Donna has
done and thank her for her dedication.
She's is just another reason that Dublin is such a great place to live.
