More often than not. we push the notion of developing a fire escape
plan or regularly checking smoke detectors to the rear of their mind,
somewhere between re-organizing the hall closet and cleaning out the
garage once and for all.
But the truth is, fires are much more common than you might imagine.
According to the United States Fire Administration: «
• The United States has one of the highest fire death rates in the
industrialized world.
• Between 1994 and 1998, an average of4,400 Americans died and anoth-
er 25,100 were injured annually as the result of fire.
• About 100 firefighters die each year in duty-related incidents.
• At least 80 percent of all fire deaths occur in residences.
• About 2 miilion fires are reported each year. Many others go unre-
ported, causing additional injuries and property loss.
• Direct property loss due to fires is estimated at $8.6 billion annu-
ally.
Realizing that you should take fire-related issues seriously, there are
ways to help your family survive should a fire occur, and there are
many products designed with fire safety in mind.
SMOKE DETECTORS
At their most annoying, when a grilled cheese sandwich runs amuck,
the high-pitched beeping of these devices is one of your first defenses
against fire. In fact, many homes and apartments are required by law
to have a certain number of smoke alarms in ratio to rooms of the
house.
Recent advances in technology have made these life-saving devices
even more valuable. For instance, the Intelligent 4D Multisensor
Detector from Honeywell gathers information from two fire sensing
elements — ionization and photoelectric — and a heat-sensing element
to signal if there’s a problem. The new Escape Light® smoke alarm
from First Alert® features a light that illuminates your way to safety.
And, an increasing number of today’s smoke detectors, like those
from MasterGuard, are designed to detect sharp increases in air tem-
perature as well as smoke. *
SAFETY LADDERS
Should a fire ignite in your home, making escape via the front door
dangerous or impossible, the only other exit may be a window. That’s

where escape ladders come in.
Quick-Escape Ladders are safe and easy-to-use. The chain is ten-
sion-tested to hold more than 1,000 pounds, and the steel rungs are
grooved for traction. Res-Q* Chain Fire Escape Ladders are ideal for
any home or office with more than one floor. They store easily by the
bed or window.
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Sometimes, you can tackle a small fire on your own. Keep a fire
extinguisher nearby, particularly in the kitchen, where many fires start,
basement or garage. Look to Badger, Pyro-Chem, and Ansi''1 for reli-
able kitchen class, dry chemical and C02 models to suit your needs.
HOME SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
Using quick response sprinklers and approved piping, hotjtes can be
built or even remodeled to include low-cost automatic sprinkler sys-
tems connected to the domestic water supply. Sprinkler systems offer
advantages to homeowners, such as a low-cost reliable safety option
that would attract many buyers and trade-offs between sprinklers and
code requirements that can result in lower construction costs, more
units per area of land; assurance of a safer environment for their fam-
ilies; protection of their investment and irreplaceable family posses-
sions and lower insurance rates. Look to manufacturers like Tyco Fire
& Building Products, and Globe Fire Sprinkler Corporation for quali-
ty sprinkler systems to protect your home.
