Vision is OKI
other's name when in trouble.
"I say my sisters name cause
I don't want to hear my name
when I'm in trouble," says
Carley. Although the girls say
their mom doesn't get them
mixed up because as Carley
says "I have fatter cheeks." The
main problem the girls seem to
have over being a twin is the
sleeping situation.
"I don't like to sleep in the
same bed. I hate it cause Carley
hogs the covers," says Carey.
Most of the local twins enjoy
being twins and don't even think
about their unique situation
unless you ask them. Most of
the comments were the same, "I
hate wearing the same-clothes"
seemed to dominate the conver-
sation, the other one was "We
always have to share". One
actually said that she didn't want
to be a twin'and her sister imme-
diately said "Yes you do," then
she agreed and decided she real-
ly liked being a twin. I guess we
all know who wears the pants in
the twinship. However, all in all
the twins said that they got
along pretty well with each
other.
Cesar Macias, who is in Pre-
K, told me that he liked being a
twin because there are two of
them and they get the same
juice. One little girl, when
asked what she liked about
being a twin, she simply said "I
don't know, Our Mommy
bought us at the hospital."
Only 5 sets of twins were
hard to tell apart for me,
although they said that their
teacher could tell them apart
easily. After a short while I
began to notice different things
about each one of them.
Weather it be a scar on their
eyebrow or even their manner-
ism. The only one's that kept
me guessing was the Lewis
twins.
I had to take the picture of all
the twins to the school to be cor-
rectly identified and when it
came to Conner and Cooper, no
one was for sure, so we went
right to the source. Cooper said
that it was him and then we
asked Conner if the same one
was him and he said yes. They
both swore the same kid was
him. After a short discussion,
we decided on matching the boy
with the shoes.
Here is a little bit of trivia
about twins:
At the Louis Marshall School
in Brooklyn, New York, USA,
there were 29 sets of twins for
the 1999-2000 school year. That
is the record so far in the
Guinness World Book of
Records.
18% to 22% of twins are left-
handed compared with under
10% for non-twins.
The incidence of fraternal
twins varies by race: Of African
descent: 1 birth per 70, Of
Caucasian descent: 1 birth per
88, Of Japanese descent: 1 birth
per 150, Of Chinese descent: 1
birth per 300.

If you visit Dublin schools
and believe you have a vision
problem, don't worry. You're
not having double vision.
Dublin, it seems, has an
unusually high number of twins
and most of those can be found
at the elementary school.
There are 17 sets of twins in
Dublin schools to be exact.
The elementary is the main
school seeing double right now
with 11 sets of their own. There
are five sets in Kindergarten,
four sets in first grade while Pre-
K and third grade have one set
each. The Middle school and
High School both have three
sets.
This is the second year for the
Lewis twins. Cooper and
Conner were in Pre-K last year
and had everyone on their toes.
Conner was sick one day and
Cooper decided to go to his
(Conner's) class and pretend that
he was his brother. Cooper even
put the sticker on his shirt with
Conner's name on it. He would
have made the whole day but a
teacher asked him where
Cooper was then he slipped and
said "I'm Cooper." This is not
the only time Cooper pretends
to be Conner.
"He's gotten really good.
When he gets in trouble, I'll ask
him what's his name and he will
say Conner," says mom, Kim
Lewis. Even the Belew twins
say that they like to say the
accidents for Aug.
Genetic factors do not appear
to have much affect upon the
incidence of identical twins.
Identical twins exhibit almost
identical brain wave patterns.
Twinning does run in fami-
lies, but supposedly only frater-
nal twins and not identical
twins. Yet there are many, many
families with identical twins in
each generation, and sometimes
even several sets of identical
twin children, so this ostensible
scientific "fact" doesn't seem to
be supported by the evidence.
There is little evidence to
support the popular notion that
twins "skip" a generation. If the
mother is herself a fraternal
twin, the chances of having
twins increases about five-fold.
The modem world record for
giving birth to multiples is held
by Leontina Albina from Chile,
whose 55 children included
three sets of triplets.
The all-time historical record
is claimed by a Russian who is
purported to have given birth to
6 pairs of twins, 6 sets of
triplets, and 4 sets of quads. (If
true, it means her 46 children
included no singletons at all!)
Twins have been known to
develop their own "language"
that only they understand. This
process is known as "cryptopha-
sia."

Rural system offers transit
The Transit System, Inc.
(TTS), a Texas Dept, of
Transportation (TxDOT) funded
rural transit operator in Erath
County, provides the only cur-
rently available public trans-
portation in Erath County,
except commercial bus service.
TTS currently serves Somervell,
Hood, and Erath Counties. It
has been in operation here since
October 1, 2002 and is intended
to serve all residents of Erath
County.
Erath County's senior citizens
who are aged sixty or older are
eligible to enjoy the privilege of
riding each month at no charge
for up to five round trips that
begin and end in Erath County.
These "free rides" are possible
through a contract between TTS
and Erath County Senior
Citizens, Inc (ECSC) and a pro-
gram provided by the North
Central Texas Council of
Government's Area Agency on
Aging. There is at least one
other similar contract between
TTS and Cross Timbers Family
Services that enables eligible
citizens to use the public trans-
portation system at no cost.
In addition, and in an effort to
equalize the cost of service,
"Dublin Dollars" are available
to residents of the City of
Dublin. These "Dublin Dollars”
enable the bearer to ride the
transit system for half the regu-
lar fare. This is intended to par-
tially offset the cost of fares
because of TTS's current rate
structure, which is based on the
distance from its branch office
in Stephenville. "Dublin
Dollars" were created in recog-
nition of the City of Dublin's
financial support of TTS. The
City of Stephenville is the only
other local government organi-
zation now providing financial
support to TTS. *
Members of The Erath
County Transportation
Advisory Committee, ECTAC
are convinced that there are
many citizens in our county who
are not benefiting from the ser-
vice and whose daily lives and
activities could be greatly
enhanced by public transporta-
tion if more affordable services
were available. As such, the
committee is actively examining
Erath County's transportation
needs in an ongoing effort to
bring the best public transporta-
tion possible to our county. If
you have comments or sugges-
tions to make to the committee,
please call or write to Jeff
Sandford, ECTAC Chairman, at
Stephenville Chamber of
Commerce, or e-mail him at

ty government representative
The Texas Highway Patrol
investigated 29 rural traffic
accidents in Erath County dur-
ing August, according to
Sergeant Bobby, supervisor for
this Highway Patrol Area.
These accidents resulted in one
death and 21 injuries.
The total rural traffic acci-
dents for Erath County this year
are 227, which resulted in five
deaths and 170 injuries.
The twenty-two counties
which comprise highway
Patrol District 6A have had a
total of 5,949 rural traffic acci-
dents this year, which have
resulted in 151 deaths and
3,722 injuries. This compares
to 6,136 accidents, 158 deaths,
and 3,858 injuries reported dur-
ing this same period last year.
