Pig Tales from Hogtown
By: Carol Pell
We are so thankful for the 2
inches of rain that we received
here on Saturday! Wouldn't it
be nice if we could get a few
more inches to help with our
drought!
The fire school held at the
old school house here in
Desdemona was a success even
with the rain. We hope it was
an informative day for
everyone.
Are you all ready for a huge
garage sale! The Desdemona
Activity Center is full of good
stuff. Our sale starts Thursday,
May 21 and runs through
Saturday, May 23. We will
open the doors at 8 a.m. each
morning. Closing time will be 5
p.m. or until we have no more
customers each day. Y'allcome
- we may have just what you
have been looking for!
Have a safe and happy
Memorial Day.
A SOLDIER’S WORK IS
NEVER DONE- During a
Multicultural celebration at Dublin
Middle School last Friday, Gabe
Schooley spoke to the student
body about the life of a soldier
around the time of the Civil War
and Indian War. Following an
in-depth examination of the
soldiers' daily lives. Schooley
called students and teachers up to
the stage who were dressed in the
clothes of the day and they were
shown the proper way to march
and salute.

Woman's Thursday Club BycatheyPendleton
The Woman’s Thursday
Club met May 7 at the First
Methodist Church. Fran Jumey
Was the hostess. President
Hilda Underwood called the
meeting to order and Mary
Haley led the club collect.
Billie Jean Mayes, Club
Secretary, called the roll and
then read the minutes from the
previous meeting. Nancy
Wooldridge presented the
program on Utah. She showed
a film about Utah which
depicted the beauty and
diversity of the 45th state.
Utah is a natural wonderland
with abundant wildlife in snow
covered mountains, rich red
canyons, and colorful deserts.
The Great Salt Lake is the
largest lake west of the
Mississippi River and contains
a higher concentration of salt
than the oceans. The Bonneville
Salt Flats is a huge area with a
Hat hard surface ideal for'
racing.
Utah has a rich legacy of the
ancient Indian population.
Two major tribes were the
Paiute in the south and Ute in
the north. They made their
homes in pueblos and cliff
dwellings. There are many
remaining artifacts and ruins to
document their presence.
Drawings are still visible on
canyon walls. Some drawings
were chipped into the rock and
others were drawn on the
walls.
Early exploration in Utah
was done by the Spanish.
However, the Spanish were not
interested in colonizing this
area. The first American
explorers probably were fur
traders in early 1800. Soon
afterward hundreds of traders
and trappers were crossing the
state.
Most of the first permanent
settlers of Utah were Mormons.
Brigham Young became the
leader of this group after the
death of Joseph Smith and he
established settlements in the
Great Salt Lake area.
They planted crops in the
valleys and made farming
productive. Mormon Square
in Salt Lake City is the most
visited site in Utah. It is the
home of the renowned Mormon
Tabernacle Choir.
Golden Spike Park celebrates
the joining of the railroad in
1869 from the east and from
the west. Once the railroad
was open, settlers poured into
Ihis area and in 20 years the
frontier was no more.
There are many national and
state parks in Utah. Lake
Powell was created by
damming the Colorado River
at Glen Canyon. This is a large
lake with unique inlets and
stunning red canyons and
vistas. Utah has more natural
arches and bridges created by
erosion than any other location
in the US. These arches and
bridges can be seen at ttie
national parks - Bryce Canyon,
Arches, Zion, Canyonlands.
and Capitol Reef.
These parks offer
breathtaking overviews,
brilliant red rock sunsets and
adventure-filled hiking trails,
plus the opportunity for
exhilarating relaxation.
The parks are located in
close proximity so it is easy to
see them all in one trip.
Alternately, each park makes a
great destination in its own
right; several days may be
spent exploring a Utah national
park and never see all of its
wonders.
President Underwood
reported on the spring
Federated Women's Clubs
convention in Westlake. She
thanked the hostess Fran
Jumey for the delicious
refreshments and wished each
a Happy Mother’s Day and a
great summer. The next
meeting will be September 26
for Federation Day.

OBSERVATIONS-
Cont'd from A2
Birthday, now celebrated as Presidents' Day; Veterans Day, and Memorial
Day. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date
to the last Monday in May.
The law took effect at the federal level in 1971. After some initial
confusion and unwillingness to comply, all 50,states adopted the measure
within a few years. Veterans Day was eventually changed back to its
traditional date
Waterloo's designation as the birthplace took place just in time for the
village's centennial observance. The U.S. House of Representatives and
the Senate unanimously passed House Concurrent Resolution 587 on May
17 and May 19, 1966 respectively, which reads in part as follows:
"Resolved that the Congress of the United Stales, in recognition of the
patriotic tradition set in motion one hundred years ago in the Village of
Waterloo, NY, does hereby officially recognize Waterloo, New York as the
birthplace of Memorial Day..."
On May 26,1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a Presidential
Proclamation recognizing Waterloo as the Birthplace of Memorial Day. .
I hope you have a safe and happy Memorial Day.
