The Salem Witch IHab
. ..' '•£ .' V': ’■'SfeS
Last week, as we ended
part <me of a two part
history of witchcraft, we
concluded with the
accounting of the first
widely known event in the
New England colonies
where in 1688, a woman
was accused of bewitching
children of the Goodwin
family.
The accusation linked a
family servant, a woman,
to witchcraft, which
eventually placed her in a
hangman's noose.
This event turned out to
be the forerunner of the
"Salem witch trials". A
coming period of mass
hysteria and paranoid
fears throughout the Salem
area. A period of wild
accusations of witchcraft,
followed by outrageous
investigations, and pre
determined interrogation
results.
The outcomes of the trials
were also effectively
predetermined since the
all powerful, local
magistrates, John
Hawthorne, and Johnathon
Corwin, were obviously
hungry for guilty verdicts.
Their insatiable appetites
for this outcome was easy
to nurture since they were
effectively the official
accusers, judges, and the
jury.
During the trials, even
when there was a jury, no
one in the room would
have opposed the guilty
verdicts since that would
have put them in hazard of
being accused of being a
witch themselves. The trial
events were nothing more
than a "hanging tribunal."
The much preferred
—
outcomes were the death
of the accused, usually a
The preponderance of
citizens in Salem Village
were Puritans and they
believed in the existence
of witches and witchcraft.
Too, they believed that
witchcraft was a heresy
and thus it's practitioners
must be sought out and
punished, preferably by
their deaths.
The Puritans practiced
constant evaluation of
themselves and of their
neighbors, all in an effort
to detect any indications of
sinful ways. This extreme
surveillance of self, and
neighbors, resulted in
frequent occasions of
mistrust of neighbor's
activities.
Too, their negatively
biased suspicions of their
own activities be deviled
them throughout their
own lives. This fetish for
moral perfection, as carried
to extremes in the village
effectively paved the way
for the infamous witch
trials of Salem village.
On January 20, 1692, nine
year-old Elizabeth Parris,
daughter of the minister
of the Salem village
Congregational church,
and her friend eleven year
old Abigail Williams
suddenly started behaving
as the Goodwin children
had four years earlier. Soon
Ann Putnam and various
other young girls in the
village fell victim to the
mysterious spreading
malady.
After three weeks of
futile efforts to identify
the cause of the ills a
doctor Griggs, who had
been attending the
wretched children,
suggests that witchcraft
may be the cause of their
aberrant behavior. Late in
February, 1692 the
townspeople urged the
effected girls to reveal who
was causing their illness.
Elizabeth Parris blurted
out the name of the Parris
family cook named Tituba,
who was a West Indian
slave.
The other girls Identified
townspeople Sarah Good
and Sarah Osborae as their
tormentor. On the last day
of February arrest warrants
are issued for Tituba, Sarah
Good, and Sarah Osborne.
They were quickly
arrested.
On March 1, 1692
Magistrates John
Hawthorne and Johnathon
Corwin demanded that the
three women submit to the
examination of their
unclad bodies, looking for
the tell-tale “witches mark"
The embarrassing
procedure was, of course,
unable to tell them
anything. The entire
procedure was based on
ignoranceand superstition,
and I suspect on the
improper curiosity of the
two examiners. To satisfy
their continuing curiosities
these two “very religious
men" continued to demand
the examinations of all
suspected women
throughout the Salem
witch investigations era.
On March 11, a 12 year
old girl named Ann Put nam
Jr., daughter of a wealthy
land owner in the area
showed unusual signs
attributed to witchcraft.
Others of her friends,
Mercy Lewis, Mary Walcott,
and Mary Warren allege
the affliction alao. The
next day Ann Putnam
accuses Martha Corey, an
upstanding member of the
Puritan congregation, of
colluding with the devil.
She also included Giles
Corey in her list. His trial
was salty with his own
outward disdain for the
proceedings. He was
unwilling to testify in the
hearing and was placed on
the ground and was
pressed to death with rocks
trying to make him offer
evidence. His final words
demanded that more
stones be piled on him.
One week later Abigail
Williams denounced a 71
year old woman, Rebecca
Nurse as a witch. Then on
March 21st the two
magistrates Hawthorne
and Corwin examine
Martha Corey in their
usual, very detailed,
manner.
On March 23rd a gallant
and brave Salem deputy
marshal, Samual Brabrook
arrested the four year old.
Dorcus Good, daughter of
Sarah Good, one of the
first three arrested,victims
of the village madness.
The next day the “jolly
magistrates”, Corwin and
Hawthorne, examine the
elderly Rebecca Nurse. Her
sisters, Sarah Cloyce and
Mary Easty come to defend
her. They both are arrested
as witches.. Then the
magistrates from H___
decide to interrogate the
little four year old Dorcus
Good. I can find no written
record of the details of the
meeting or it’s outcome.
Now don't assume
anything. Sort of ignore
their records so far.
On March 28th Elizabeth
Proctor is accused of
witchcraft by her hired
servant She is arrested.
On April 11th The “jolly
boys”, Corwin and
Hawthorne, examine Sarah
Cloyce and Elizabeth
Proctor looking for the
elusive “witches mark”
Elizabeth's husband, John
Proctor, incensed by the
outrageous physical
examinations of his wife,
protested, but to no avail
other than he was instantly
arrested for witchcraft.
He will eventually be
hung for his concern for
his wife.. About the same
time, Mary Warren, the
servant of the Proctors,
and Mrs Proctor.s accuser,
admits that she was lying
and accuses the other girls
of lying also. You guessed
it, she was immediately
arrested as a witch. The
jolly guys weren't going to
allow anybody to mess up
their personally
entertaining little system.
In late April townspeople
Abigail Dobbs, Bridget
Bishop, and Mary Warren
are examined by the jolly
boys. Mary Warren again
changes her story and
rejoins the accusers.
A woman, Deliverance
Hobbs foolishly admits
practicing witchcraft and
is arrested. A few days
later the “jolly pair" has a
“field day". They “examine”
nine victims including
several wives and their
defending husbands.
At the end of April several
girls accuse a former Salem
minister, George
Burroughs, of witchcraft.
On May 2nd the jolly boys,
Corwin and Hawthorne
examine Sarah Morley,
Lyndia Dustin, Susanna
Martin, and Dorcus Hoar.
The reason that Susanna
Martin was in this group,
she was accused of
bewitching a neighbor’s
ox!
On May 4th George
Burroughs was arrested in
Maine and returned to
Salem and jailed. On May
9th Sarah Churchill and
Burroughs are examined.
He is then moved to a
Boston Jail. The next day
Corwin and Hawthorne
examine George Jacobs, Sr.
and his granddaughter
Margaret Jacobs. That day
the pitiful and tormented
Sarah Osborne dies in jail.
On June 10, 1692, the
hangings start when
Bridgett Bishop is hanged
at Gallows Hill.
On June 16th an accused
man Roger Whitaker died
in jail. On July 19th the 71
year old Rebecca Nurse,
Susanna Martin, Sarah
Wildes, Sara Good, and
Elizabeth Howe are hung.
Then, On August, 19, 1692
the salty George Jacobs Sr.
was hung on Gallows hill,
along with George
Burroughs the former
minister, Martha Carrier,
John Willard, and John
Proctor, who defended his
wife before the two
arrogant magistrates
Corwin and Hawthorne.
On September 9, 1692,
Martha Corey, Mary Easty,
Alice Parker, Ann Pudeater,
Dorcusa Hoar, and Mary
Bradbury are pronounced
guilty and sentenced to
hang. In mid-September
Jiles Cory is indicted.
He will die by the pressing
of weight to his body until
he dies.
