REMEMBERING
DUBLIN

HISTORY OF SHADRACK
At the beginning of the 1966-67 school year, a new era was dawning at Dublin High School. The
students were looking forward to a new member in their school. They had been given the opportu-
| nity to help select the newest member of the personnel. Names had been nominated, and the student
body vote had been taken. Who would it be? The students waited anxiously as the name was
announced. "Shadrack" was the name and thus began the history of our mascot. As best as memory
can serve, Frances Whitefield had submitted the name. Dale Young had been asked by the cheer-
leaders to be the first ever Shadrack. "I'm just crazy enough to try anything once, so I agreed," Dale
stated.
After eleven years of stardom, Shadrack faded from the picture. As best as we can tell, the cos-
tume had worn out and another was not purchased at that time.
In the spring of 1995, Mike Rhodes, high school principal, contacted several businesses to donate
money for a new Shadrack costume. At that time, students in grades 9-12 were given a chance to try-
out for the position of Shadrack. The mascot was "resurrected" in the fall of 1995, and Angie (Locke)
Brannon had earned the honors of bringing Shadrack back to life as an integral part of DUS.
To keep the Shadrack tradition going, the Dublin Athletic Booster Club donated money for the
purchase of the present costume in 2002.
