Laboratory added to
Environmental
Response Network
Tarleton State
University’s Texas Institute
for Applied Environmental
Research (TIAER)
Laboratory was accepted
into the Environmental
Protection Agency’s
Environmental Response
Laboratory Network (ERLN)
on May 20.
The TIAER lab is the only
university/college-based
laboratory out of 565 labs
across the country that
has been accepted into the
network.
“We are one of four ERLN
labs in Texas and one of
the four ERLN labs in the
country with a mobile
laboratory,” said Mark
Murphy, laboratory
manager for the TIAER.
The secure web-based
ERLN identifies
laboratories with the
capability and capacity to
analyze chemical,
biological and radiological
agents. It was established
to provide emergency
responders with an
efficient mechanism to
obtain essential laboratory
capability and capacity
information during
emergency situations,
such as response to acts
of terrorism.
“Theoretically, we could
be called into action in
other states,” said Murphy.
“Our mobile lab is rigged
to operate any type of
equipment we have in our
main laboratory. TIAER
field staff has an
assortment of vehicles,
boats, field measurement
and sampling equipment
with the training to use
them, just as we are
competent on the lab side
of things.”
The laboratory has
extensive experience in
analyzing surface water
samples, soils and
sediments. Murphy has 25
years experience in
analysis of water, soil, air,
wastewater, hazardous
and radioactive waste in
EPA contract labs and the
nuclear power industry, as
well as 20 years in
laboratory management.
Together with specialized
technicians, the laboratory
staff represents a combined
force for quality and
legally defensible data
production.
