Romanian man gets 8 years
in prison for US fraud
VICTORIA (AP) — A man from Romania has
been sentenced to eight years in prison for an on-
line scam claiming someone in the U.S. military
needed to sell items before deploying.
A federal judge in Texas on Monday also or-
dered 29-year-old Doru Gabriel Trifu to repay
$562,000. Jurors in Victoria on Sept. 25 convicted
Trifu of 33 counts of wire fraud.
Investigators confirmed at least 230 fraudulent
transactions since 2011 with payments sent online
by potential buyers but no items delivered. Au-
thorities say the case involved transactions in
Texas, Mississippi and Alabama.
Prosecutors say Trifu was living in Orange vale,
Calif., at the time of the fraud. He faces possible
deportation after finishing his prison term.
Trucker killed in East Texas
wreck with school bus
LUFKIN (AP) — Investigators say a truck driver
has been killed in a three-vehicle wreck involving
an East Texas school bus.
Officials with the Lufkin Independent School
District say the bus driver and her own three chil-
dren were in that vehicle when the accident hap-
pened Monday afternoon on U.S. 59. District
spokeswoman Sheila Adams says all four people on
the bus were transported to a hospital to be
checked out, as a precaution.
The name of the 18-wheeler driver who died
wasn't immediately released. Another truck was
also involved in the accident. Details were not im-
mediately released on whether the driver in the
second truck required medical attention.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says
hazardous materials crews cleaned up a flamma-
ble liquid that spilled from one of the rigs.
Marshall man held
on $5M bond in wife’s death
MARSHALL (AP) — Bond has been set at $5.1
million for an East Texas man charged with killing
his wife at a hotel.
Cass County jail records show Brad Allen Dunn
of Marshall was being held Tuesday murder and
evading arrest charges. Jail officials didn't imme-
diately provide information on an attorney for
Dunn, who was arrested Sunday afternoon during
a traffic stop near Linden.
Investigators had issued an Amber Alert for the
couple's 4-year-old daughter, who was found un-
harmed with her father.
Autopsy results are pending on 31-year-old Kari
Rene Dunn. Her body was discovered Sunday
morning following a disturbance at a Marshall
hotel. The Harrison County Sheriffs Office says
initial reports indicate the woman was stabbed.
Records show Dunn, who was arraigned Mon-
day, has previous arrests on assault and family vi-
olence counts.

DALLAS (AP) — Items that once belonged to Far-
rah Fawcett, including everything from her 1977 Peo-
ple's Choice Award to her last driver's license, are set
to go up for auction.

television movie "The Burning Bed" and her passport

Soldier goes on trial
over prostitution ring
FORT HOOD (AP) — Testimony continues in the
court-martial of a Fort Hood soldier accused of using
a prostitution service involving senior noncommis-
sioned officers and cash-strapped female soldiers.
Testimony continues Tuesday in the Fort Hood
military trial of Master Sgt. Brad Grimes, a 17-year
Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Trial opened Monday
Army prosecutors accuse Grimes of participating
in a prostitution ring set up by another Fort Hood ser-
geant still under Army investigation.
The case arose from an investigation of a lower-
level coordinator of Fort Hood's sexual assault and
harassment prevention program. The Army said a
noncommissioned officer involved in the program re-
cruited female soldiers for the prostitution ring.
