Frisco now knows ack after Ennis win
EDN Photo by Dave A. Vance
The Ennis Lions’s banner Friday night at the game against Frisco in AT&T Stadium paid
tribute to Head Coach Jack Alvarez.
The Frisco Raccoons went
into AT&T last Friday un-
prepared for the Ennis
Lions. Sure, the Raccoons
may have drawn first blood
with an early touchdown and
went up 10-0 late in the first
quarter, but they didn't know
Lion head coach Jack Al-
varez or what they were get-
ting into with the Lions.
With less than a minute
left in the first quarter, Texas
Tech commit Shawn John-
son refused to go down near the Ennis 30-yard line
on a kickoff return. The senior appeared to go
down, but his knee never touched the ground as he
rolled over the defenseman. Johnson sprang back
up and continued on to Frisco's 38.
Lion quarterback Devin Smith rushed for
Ennis' first touchdown on the next play and junior
linebacker Darius Edwards recovered a Raccoon
fumble on the kickoff return to immediately take
possession back. Smith gave the ball to senior run-
ning back Nick Gabriel twice for a touchdown to
put the Lions in the lead 12-10 at the start of the
second quarter.
Gabriel scored another touchdown and the Rac-
coons answered late in the second quarter to go
into the half tied 18-18.
Frisco was quickly learning who Jack was and
what the Lions were capable of.
The Lions allowed one more Raccoon touch-
down in the third quarter on a kickoff return but
it would not be enough to come back from a flurry
of Ennis scores. Baylor commit Terence Williams
scored two touchdowns, sophomore Tre Elliott
caught a 20-yard pass in the end zone and Gabriel
scored his third touchdown near the end of the
third quarter to win the game 46-25.
The Lions missed out on a couple of extra point
attempts and a few mistakes were made on both
sides of the ball, but the Lions picked one another
up like they have been doing all season.
When the Lions begin to falter, they become
stronger.
That is something the Raccoons were not pre-
pared for.
Frisco may not have known Jack before the
game, but the Lions introduced him to Frisco in a
powerful way.
Frisco now knows Jack; the Lions made sure of
that.

District planning Maroon Out’ to support Lions
Henry Martinez
Special to the EDN
With the Ennis Lions football
team advancing the furthest it
has since winning the state title
in 2004, Ennis ISD wants to en-
courage the entire community to
"maroon out" on Thursday, Dec. 5
in support of the Lions.
"Please share this with every-
one you can so that we, as one
strong Ennis community, can
show our unwavering support
for the Ennis Lions as they pre-
pare to play Mesquite Poteet on
Friday," said Henry Martinez,
EISD director of communica-
tions.
After careful consideration re-
garding inclement weather con-
ditions that are expected on
Friday, the playoff game between
Ennis and Mesquite Poteet has
been rescheduled and moved to a
new venue. It will be played at 6
p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5 at Kincaide
Stadium in Dallas.
"We looked at it hard and con-
sulted with the coaches and ad-
ministrators from both schools,
and we felt this was the best de-
cision for the safety of our people
due to the inclement weather
that is in the forecast," said Jack
Alvarez, Lions head coach and
athletic director. "We don't want
to put people in hazard's way in
trying to get to the football
game."
Alvarez said tickets that have
already been sold will be hon-
ored at Thursday's game. Except
for the new date, time and venue,
he said most everything else re-
garding the game should be the
same.
"We still look forward to a
great and exciting playoff foot-
ball game," he added. "It's unfor-
tunate that the weather is
causing us to make these
changes, but we hope everyone
agrees that the safety of every-
one involved is the top priority."
The winner advances to the
state semifinals. Advance tickets
for the game are on sale this
week at Ennis High School-Bard-
well side. Sales are from 8-11 a.m.
and noon-4 p.m. daily.
Ticket sales will cut off at 1
p.m. Thursday Ennis will be the
home team. Advance ticket
prices are $8 for adults and $6 for
students. They are $10 at the gate.
The Ennis Lions (13-0) clawed their way to
a 46-25 victory over the Frisco Raccoons (9-
4) on Friday.

Texas holds
back Vandy
AUSTIN (AP) — Isa-
iah Taylor had 14 points
and eight assists and
Texas won its first
home game against a
power conference team
this season in a 70-64
victory over Vanderbilt
on Monday night.
The Longhorns (7-1)
led by as many as 13
points in the second
half and were able to
hold off Vanderbilt (4-
3), which trimmed the
Longhorns lead to one
point in the final
minute after an Eric
McClellan steal and
dunk.
Texas struggled from
the free throw line,
making just 10 of 16 at-
tempts before knocking
down five straight in
the final 24 seconds, the
first two coming from
Javan Felix following
McClellan's slam. That
made it a 65-62 game be-
fore Demarcus Hol-
land's game-sealing
three-point play with
12.6 seconds left.

broke out of a shooting
slump to score 29 points
and the Jazz earned

Duncan lifts
Spurs over
Hawks
SAN ANTONIO (AP)
— Here comes Tim
Duncan once again. It
turns out San Antonio's
steady star needed a
couple weeks to find his
rejuvenated form from
Duncan made a
jumper with 0.4 seconds
left to lift the Spurs to a
102-100 victory over the
Atlanta Hawks on Mon-
day night.
"(Duncan) did a great
job," Spurs coach Gregg
Popovich said. "We
were having a tough
night in a lot of ways
and he was superb."
Duncan finished
with 23 points and 21 re-
bounds, becoming the
oldest player with 20
points and 20 rebounds
since the NBA began
keeping track of re-
bounds during the 1985-
86 season.
"We know the type of
player he is," Atlanta
center A1 Horford said.
"He's just a winner; he
finds ways every time."
Boris Diaw had 16
points and Tiago Split-
ter finished with 11 as
San Antonio outscored
the younger and more
athletic Atlanta front
court 50-40.
